Elia’s mouth moved, but Dasha couldn’t hear what she was saying as the tremendous explosion in the sky drowned out all other sounds. Louder than any thunder boom, it ripped her breath away, sounding like the entire world was being torn apart. The late afternoon sky dimmed as dark clouds washed across its previously unflawed expanse. The refugees cried out as they clutched each other. Dasha wanted to collapse under the powerful hopelessness that crashed over her. The explosion came from the south, and she knew without seeing that it had originated in Ceasa. Her home. And this gloom spreading from it like blood from a wound must be a harbinger of the end.
As the sky dimmed, the canyon reverberated with aftershocks of the crash, each echo shaking the rock faces around them. Small avalanches rolled from the heights. Somewhere far below, the earth groaned in torment. Within a few heartbeats, the last of the daylight had been extinguished, leaving them in absolute darkness, silent except for the sobs and moans of the frightened people.
Then, Jirom’s voice rang out like a clarion call. “Torches!”
The silver warriors jumped into action, pulling brands from their rucksacks and lighting them. Dasha took a deep breath. The illumination banished some of the futility she was feeling.
“All of you,” Jirom addressed the refugees. “We are returning to our army, which marches on Ceasa. The way will be dangerous, but we have food and water. Those who wish are welcome to come with us. Or else, you are free to go.”
Without another word, he headed out of the canyon, followed by his men. The old silver man looked around. Dasha stiffened as his strange gaze lingered on her for a moment. Then he turned and left with the others.
“Well?” Elia asked. “What shall we do?”
The refugees trudged along after the silver warriors, looking as pitiful and downtrodden as when they had followed Harrid. This was their lot, and they accepted it, for better or worse. But they were still her people.
“We go with them.”
