Mike’s left eye peeked around the door. He scanned the area, waiting for the opportune moment to escape the confines of his lover’s room. His interest was already waning. The thrill of sneaking a quick half an hour here or there had lost its excitement.

The moment the woman had extended her stay; his clandestine meetings had become a chore. Now he had to meet her to stop her from blabbing to his wife. Every day that passed, she was becoming more insistent, sulkier and demanding. She was more work than Marion! Now he had two women to contend with. He felt doubly trapped, and he didn’t want either of them.

He slipped outside, striding across the campsite, heading for the Manor House. His head swung left and right, checking nobody had seen him.

He didn’t see Julia and Francis heading straight for him.

‘That’s weird,’ Francis said, frowning. ‘I wonder what Mike’s doing in that chalet.’

Julia shrugged. ‘Probably nothing. Someone’s probably called him to repair a dodgy lightbulb or a dripping tap. These campers seem to drag the first member of staff they see into their problems, regardless of their job status. Why they don’t just report it in reception, I’ll never know.’

On cue, Mike headed into the reception area and stood at the desk.

‘There you go. Mike’s probably reporting it now.’

Francis nodded… but he wasn’t so sure. Mike had looked pretty furtive when he had scarpered from that room. Perhaps the camper had called him in for a problem, but Mike had taken advantage of the situation. The chef’s heart contracted, imagining Marion sitting alone in her chalet. She seemed so lost. A true performer, she plastered on a smile to disguise the sorrow in her heart.
