Chapter Eleven

Will waited outside the Armory pub for over an hour. Finally a burgundy Ford Tempo blasting rock music pulled up to the curb.

Nigel was at the wheel, and Toby was in the passenger seat. He was drinking from a large bottle of vodka.

“Christ,” said Will. “Took you long enough. I thought we were going to talk business.”

“Look, dude, I’m sorry,” said Toby. “I figured we could have some fun first.” He laughed. Clearly he was drunk.

Will was not impressed. “What’s he doing here?” Will asked, motioning to Nigel.

“Aw, come on,” said Toby. “You guys still mad at each other?”

“Hey, I’m cool if he is,” said Nigel.

“Will?” Toby asked. “Look, just come back to my place. I have the dopest dope. Promise it’ll be epic. Like the old days.”

Will thought for a moment. “What the hell.”

Toby hooted in celebration. “That’s what I’m talking about!”

Will looked around, then got into the back seat, and the car pulled away.

Toby’s house was in the forest, down a long stretch of gravel road. Cars and trucks lined the drive, and loud heavy-metal music came from inside.

Locals in their late teens and early twenties filled the small kitchen. It was a crowd of jean jackets and plaid. The kitchen counter overflowed with empty beer bottles and half-full liquor bottles. A yellow plastic bucket stamped with the SulCorp logo sat beside the fridge. It was completely filled with bottle caps. The group was having a great time, already riled up.

Will leaned against the kitchen door frame. He was the only one without a drink in his hand. He checked his watch.

“Where did Toby go?” he asked, but no one answered him.

Nigel was at the center of the throng, a girl in each arm. He saw Will standing alone.

“Hey! Someone loosen that guy up,” shouted Nigel.

Will shot him a look.

Toby came into the room, grabbed a beer and brought it over to Will.

Will shook his head.

“It’s a party, Will,” said Toby. “Remember the concept?”

“Yeah, but that’s not why I’m here.”

“Lighten up, man. We can talk business later.”

Will thought for a moment. “Got anything stronger?”

“What? Like whiskey?”

“Stronger.”

“I’m afraid you’re going to have to be more specific, old friend. I mean, I have to be sure you won’t go tattling on me. Not that the cops in this town give me much trouble.”

“Got something that’ll make me forget who I am?” asked Will. “A pill, a powder, a kick to the head? I don’t care. Send me to hell and back.”

Toby smiled. “Now that’s the spirit.” He motioned for Will to follow.

Once outside, Toby, Nigel and the girls all crowded around the firepit as Will started a fire.

“Would you look at that?” said Nigel. “The Boy Scout strikes again.”

Will stood. “Screw you.”

“Now, now, children,” said Toby. “We came here to have a good time. And our Boy Scout friend here had the genius idea to take this party to the next level. So we should all thank the Boy Scout.”

“Thanks, Boy Scout!” they all shouted together.

“So what’s the drug?” Will asked.
