At the sugarbush, a game of pursuit, short-lived: Owl climbs out of the passenger side as soon as they stop, grabbing her pail and heading into the trees on the right-hand side of the road, looking back once to see him following, at a distance, that stance of his, head down, hands in pockets.

She darts through the bush, abandoning her usual orderly tree check, testing if this is really happening, that this sense of thrill, power, isn’t some game she’s playing alone; she’s never known it, never dreamed it for herself, can hardly believe she might be holding it in her hand. Drops the pail to the snow, a bread crumb, then finds an old, thick maple to press her back to, waiting, counting silently, eyes closed, seeing if he’ll close the rest of the distance.

Picks up on the final scuffs of his footsteps as he nears, and she steps out, grabs him, his hands covering hers, and pulls him around the tree with her, the two of them ending up against the trunk, smiling into each other’s faces, and this time the kissing doesn’t require anything of her, training wheels off, returning to what they began yesterday with an energy that melts any doubt she had.

So when he pauses, breathless, saying, “This is okay, then,” close to her ear, she cuts him off with, “Yes,” then, “Yes,” reaching up to hold his face, direct it back to her, as a breeze winnows through the bare branches, a rattle and a hush.
