CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Undisclosed hospital grounds, North Carolina

Makayla woke up just before dawn and instantly grabbed her phone. She didn’t sit up in the cot, remaining on her back. She powered up her phone and after it booted up, saw that she had about seven percent of her battery left. The red in the battery icon seemed redder somehow, like a stern and fatalistic warning of some kind.

Next, she checked the time and found that it was 6:06. The final thing she checked was her service indicators. When she saw two bars, she did finally sit up. And though she instantly went to her list of recently called numbers, she found it far too difficult to try calling Gary. What if she placed the call and it failed? What if she called, he answered, and the call dropped out after just two seconds?

Then at least you’ll know they’re okay, she answered herself internally. At least they’ll know you’re still okay.

She was crying before she even placed the call and wasn’t exactly sure why. She glanced over to the cot next to her and saw that Wayne was still asleep. Good, she thought. That man deserves all the sleep he can get.

Hands shaking, she pressed the number and brought the phone to her ear. There was silence at first…then a faint clicking, like a robotic pulse. She knew this meant the line was trying to connect but she also knew that after a few seconds of this, it was pretty much a guarantee that it wasn’t going to go through. Regardless, she sat on the edge of the cot for another minute, listening to that click and willing it to connect.

When she recalled her very low battery life, she ended the call and wiped away her tears. She thought about trying to go back to sleep but knew there was no way she’d be able to. Quietly, she pocketed her phone and stepped away from the little cluster of cots. She saw where another person had come in during the night, fast asleep against the wall.

She made her way over to the desk where she and Wayne had checked in. There was a woman behind—different from the one who had helped them last night—typing something into a prehistoric laptop. The woman looked up when Makayla approached the desk, doing her best to make the smile she flashed look as genuine as possible.

“Get some good sleep?” she asked.

“Yes, I guess. I was wondering…and I hate to be so needy because I can’t even begin to imagine the real problems people are facing…but is there anywhere I could charge my phone?”

“Honey, everyone is dealing with problems, and they’re all real. I do know of a place where you can charge your phone. And if you want, you can grab a shower.”

Makayla felt her eyes starting to sting and a lump rising up in her throat. She nodded and, trying to keep her voice from cracking, said, “That would be amazing. Thank you.”

“You’re going to head out of here and step right across to the neighboring building.
