CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

Lobby First Floor, FGA Tower, New York City, New York, United States

“Dah! Dah! Daaaaah! Da-da-da-dah!” Elvis loudly sang as they entered the shiny skyscraper, earning them more attention than Rose would have liked. She was already getting quite a few stares in her black suit with knives and potions strapped to it. The singing dragon flying next to her definitely ensured that everyone they passed gawked at them with intrigue.

“Would you stop singing?” Rose asked. “This is a place of business.”

“This is a place of love,” Elvis argued. “And that means rock-and-roll and my brilliant singing.”

“When you say brilliant, do you actually mean loud and obnoxious?” she questioned.

Elvis regarded her for a moment, blinking at her with a studious expression. “Seriously, I need to get that fire magic because I think that your eyebrows might be planning a hostile takeover of your forehead.”

Rose glanced at Alfred. “If you have any jokes about a reptile who thinks he can sing, please fire away.”

The magitech AI actually smiled at this, an emotion that seemed strange for the robotic technology. “Oh, I see. So he’s a velocirapper.”

Elvis groaned, lowering in the air slightly. “Wow, that was bad. Like, new level bad.”

“I happen to like your jokes, Alfred,” Rose smugly returned. “Please keep them going as you take us on the tour.”

He nodded. “As you wish, Mortal Seven Beaufont.”

When they entered the lobby, Rose paused to take in the large space bustling with people. Currently, there were dozens of chatty fairy godmothers and discerning agents standing or milling about. Many of their gazes skipped to Rose and Elvis before pretending to be uninterested and looking away.

The lobby’s walls were all black marble, which didn’t contrast with the black granite floors. Hanging overhead was a huge and modern black glass chandelier. The couches in front of the bank of elevators at the back of the room didn’t look comfortable, but there was still a nice charm about the ultra-modern place that governed love.

“The lobby is my main station,” Alfred informed them over the echoing chatter. The lobby had active acoustics thanks to all the stone walls, ceilings, and floors. “However, you can also page me by calling for me with a request, and I will immediately materialize.”

“Much like you.” Rose looked at Elvis.

“I’m not your genie, at your beck and call all the time,” the red dragon defiantly argued. He glanced up to the left. “What? So what if I signed a contract that said the opposite? She doesn’t have to know that.”

“You’re talking out loud, and I can hear you,” Rose dryly muttered.

“Oh, really? I didn’t think you could hear anything with those eyebrows muffling your ears.”

“Really with the eyebrow jokes? When did those start, and more importantly, when will they end?”

“Never!” Elvis threatened, his mustache unwinding beside his face.

“You two banter much like some others I know,” Alfred interjected. “I think you’ll fit in quite well around here.” He indicated a desk at the back of the lobby. “The security guard station is also in the lobby.
