A dove chair doesn’t have to be a chair at all. Here, Rob Paradise puts a camo-painted 5-gallon bucket with a cushion swivel lid to use, proving that anything capable of holding LOTS of shells will work.

Weight and fit – I threw these two in as a “just because.” Personally, I like a lighter dove gun, not because I’m going to be carrying it much, but just because I seem to shoot a lighter gun better. As for fit, that’s a no-brainer. Like Phil Bourjaily, shotgunning editor for Field & Stream, says – “If it doesn’t fit you, it doesn’t shoot where you look.” And it’s pretty important to shoot where you look. And vice versa.

Shotshell choice – 1-ounce of #7½ shot in lead, or an ounce in #7 steel. That’s in the 12-gauge. For the 20, there’s either -ounce of lead #7½, or ¾-ounce of steel #7. Me? For the perfect fodder for the perfect dove gun, I’ll pick the steel – yes, even if the location and the regulations don’t require I choose a non-toxic load. Steel’s quick, patterns well in these small shot sizes, and kills light-feathered things like doves as well as any lead load. Plus, it provides an apples-to-apples warm-up for waterfowl season. Yes, I’ll go with ¾-ounce of steel #7 shot.

Shotgun accessories – Here, I’m referring to items such as slings, camouflage, optics, tube extensions, ported species-specific chokes…you know, things like that. One word – none.
