Many of us don’t often spend much time thinking about our purses. We tend to carry around the same ratty tote we’ve used for years. And besides that functional tote, we have a bunch of random clutches and small purses sitting at the back of our closet that we bought at the 11th hour for an event to match an outfit. But there are a few essential purses that will really make your outfits and which you will be grateful you have. It’s not important to have the latest trendy purse, but rather, one that suits your body type and style. In this chapter, I explain which bags look best with each, how to use your bags to complement your outfits, and how to choose colours that are right for your skin tone, as well as basic maintenance and upkeep.

In my opinion, it’s important to take your time shopping for purses, and then purchasing the best-quality and most classic version you can afford. Less is more here—I’d rather you invest in fewer good-quality bags than have lots of cheap ones. And when you are spending more money, it’s best to stick to neutral colours, which can easily transition and be paired with many outfits. The examples I give below are designer so that you can look them up online or in a boutique and imagine their size and shape, but there are lots of options at other price points. For instance, you’ll often find good-quality, great-looking bags at vintage or consignment shops for a fraction of what they cost new.
