The days seem to be running into one another. Maybe it's because I am basically spending all my time in one place, the vineyards. I worked constantly back at the firm, but my life was segmented into workouts, flirting with the baristas at my coffee haunt before work, and even life at the office, though it was all work, meant seeing a variety of people and having lunch at some fabulous restaurants. My grandfather's farmhouse, though kept tidy by Ellie – and her efforts are obvious – needs a facelift. I think it's also time to invest in furniture. I am tired of feeling the coils on my backside when I sit on the couch at the end of the day.

The other thing I am neglecting is my morning workout. I am getting plenty of physical exercise working on random tasks in the vineyard. Now that we have the test results from the soil and are reconditioning it, I am working with tradesmen to see if the work buildings can be salvaged or if they need to be rebuilt. I am sifting through stuff in each of these buildings, sorting out junk from usable material.

I am getting a good workout, more or less, but I like the measurability of the gym. That's me being a little OCD. I feel like it's not up in the air if I can count the reps, though my body is feeling the exercise in my vineyard workday. No wonder my grandfather has always been in amazing shape. I am not sure how he did it year in and year out. For sure, the top of my list is water stations. Physically working like this requires lots of hydration, and I am parched. I check my smartwatch. It's time for lunch.

The crew of experts that I started out with has now grown into teams of specialties. Those experts are now crew chiefs, and they do their own thing, on their own schedule. I saunter into the farmhouse, the back door of which takes me right into the kitchen. I draw a glass of water from the sink, and it tastes awfully good. It is as fresh as the mountain lakes outlying Roseland. This actually surprises me because of all the things I would have guessed had aged out and needed to be replaced; it would have been the pipes. I kneel down and check under the sink.

I hear someone come in. I am sort of tucked behind a kitchen island, so I can't see who it is, and probably they can't see me. I was going to stand up and announce myself, except I hear crying. Not crying exactly; more like sobbing.

It's Ellie. I don't know what to do. I don't want to embarrass her, but I don't want to invade her privacy. I bump into something on purpose under the sink to let her know I am here and find what I need to know. My grandfather has a state-of-the-art filtration system installed, at least for water running into the kitchen.
