THE NEXT DAY WAS Saturday and Jeff had the entire day free unless there was some emergency. While he could sleep late, he rose at his regular time. So he headed for the kitchen to cook breakfast. It was time Diane got a break.

It also might soften her attitude toward him. After his teasing remark last night, she’d refused to speak to him, even after they got home.

And Paul wasn’t any help. He was too irritated by his forced participation at the kissing booth. He scarcely noticed when Diane went to bed early, a book in her hand. He and Jeff ended up watching a guy movie by themselves.

When he reached the kitchen, his first task was to make a pot of coffee. He needed the caffeine. Then he cooked bacon. After mixing up the pancake batter, he heated the griddle while he cut up some fruit. He’d found strawberries and grapes in the refrigerator and bananas on the counter.

He was putting batter on the griddle when the kitchen door swung open. Diane stopped abruptly, as she discovered him in the kitchen.

“Diane, you can’t still be mad at me. Come on in and have some breakfast. I’ve got everything ready.” He watched as she considered his words.

“Don’t think I’ve forgiven you,” she said, her voice gruff. “You embarrassed me in front of my family and friends.” But she did enter the kitchen and sit down at the table.

He poured a mug of coffee and carried it to her. “I know, but I don’t see why that was so embarrassing. I was just kidding. And it’s not like you’ve never been kissed before.”

Returning to the stove, he flipped the pancakes before taking a plate out of the cabinet.

Diane got up again and he feared she was leaving. “Diane!”

“I’m just getting the syrup. You forgot to put it on the table.”

“Oh. Sorry.” He handed her the plate of pancakes and immediately poured more batter on the gril. He was looking forward to sharing a quiet meal with her. He’d just gotten to the table with his breakfast when they both heard the children stirring.

“I was hoping—I thought the kids would sleep in,” he finished lamely.

“Are you losing your enthusiasm for children? They never sleep in when you want them to,” Diane said, staring at him.

“No, I still want kids but that doesn’t mean I don’t like adult time, too.”

Diane took a bite of her pancakes. After chewing, she said, “I thought you had adult time last night after the kids went to sleep.”

“With Paul? That wasn’t what I had in mind.”

Just then, Toby and Janie entered the room. Janie ran to Diane to crawl up in her lap and give her a hug. Toby, too, crossed to Diane’s side and hugged her before he sleepily sat down.

“Hey! What about me? Don’t I get a hug?” Jeff asked. It pleased him when both children hurried to his side and gave him a hug. True, Janie went back to Diane, but she did give him a hug.
