You control your internal environment, so stop battering your self-esteem and telling yourself life is hopeless. If you’re lacking self-confidence, start by listing your positive attributes and put your focus on what you do like rather than what you don’t.

In the same way, it is better to focus on what you do have rather than what you don’t. You can become aware of the abundance in your life by starting a gratitude list. Include anything and everything that makes you grateful: for example, the sun shone today, my bus came on time, the guy at the grocery store smiled at me, the flowers in the park are in full bloom, and so on. Read through your list every day, add to it, and watch it get longer as the weeks pass. There is always something to be grateful for; you just have to be open to perceiving it.

Just as you can control the quality of how you talk to yourself, you can control what information you feed yourself from the outside. Fill your environment with people who make you feel good, and information that inspires you: e.g. listen to uplifting music in the car, watch programs on TV that are entertaining and informative, read books that focus on the positive aspects of life. Be discerning in what you read and watch, and who you associate with – it’s your choice.

Being positive doesn’t mean being foolishly over-optimistic that everything will turn out okay, it means taking the time to understand how and why you have the ‘perception’ you do of certain things in your life. If your ‘perceptions’ are simply inbuilt reactions that you’ve inherited from other people, then it’s time to start thinking about what you really think and whether the glass really is half-full or half-empty. It’s about taking responsibility for how you perceive your environment, your behaviors, and yourself.

Investigate the law of attraction and make up your own mind about whether you could make it work in your life. After all, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain from it.
