At quarter to eleven, Nash sidled up to our table. He was still wearing the tight T-shirt and jeans he’d been wearing behind the bar, but he had a backpack slung over one shoulder. I slid off my stool, and he wrapped an arm around my waist and kissed my temple. It was a familiar gesture that rippled from the point where his lips had rested to the tips of my toes.

I quickly introduced him to Ben and Mark, and we all chatted for a few minutes. Nash’s arm stayed wrapped around me.

He leaned in and whispered against my ear. “Ready to go?”

I nodded.

“What are your plans for the rest of the evening?” Mark asked with a waggle of his brows.

Nash glanced at me. “I was thinking late-night Chinese at my place. There’s a place around the corner, and I don’t live far from here.”

“Sounds great,” I said. An awkward silence followed, and for a split second I wondered if maybe I really did need help reintegrating into gay society. I wasn’t sure what happened next.

“Well, you guys have fun,” Ben said, effectively dismissing us. Nash’s arm slid from my waist and his hand trailed down my inner arm until he could link our fingers together.

“Ready?”

“Ready.”

We cut through the crowd, and when we were outside, Nash led me around the corner and down the street, heading west toward Halsted. We crossed at the next crosswalk, and I looked down the street to see Pride revelers spilling out of bars and into the street. A couple of the places had their sound systems turned up loud enough to provide a soundtrack for the overflow party.

“My favorite Chinese place is just up ahead under the ‘L’ tracks,” Nash said once we were far enough away from Halsted that we could hear each other again.

“Sounds good.” I was suddenly nervous. Everything had been great at the library and then at the bar, and my body was still on fire after that kiss, even an hour later, but I felt like there was a lot riding on the rest of the night.

Nash’s fingers brushed the back of my hand, and I instinctively turned it so he could take it. When our fingers were intertwined, he squeezed, and I turned to meet his eyes. The heat I still saw there, settled my nerves a little.

“I know I kissed you earlier, but I’m not expecting anything else.” My stomach pitched. I definitely wanted more, but I appreciated that Nash wasn’t going to push.

The southbound red line rumbled overhead as Nash dropped my hand to push open the door of the tiny Chinese restaurant. The scent of garlic, ginger, and soy sauce made my mouth water, and I could already tell, just by the smell, that the food was going to be awesome. Nash had said the spot was small, but it was actually tiny, the blink and you’ll totally miss it kind of small. There was a window were a cash register sat next to a stack of napkins and a container of rolled silverware.
