Mother’s Milk

John, Asura, and Claire huddled behind a water fountain, watching Arlo pace back and forth. There were dozens of zombies behind him, growling and snarling, awaiting his command, but Arlo seemed oblivious to them; he was watching a strange tree that had broken the roof. Arlo’s transformation slightly amused John; he no longer resembled the quiet boy who always looked one step behind the world. Arlo was a product of evil now, taking lives when Arlo deemed it necessary while disregarding the Sunday School bullshit their parents had tried shoving down their throats. John found it funny that although they took different paths, he and his best friend Arlo were central figures in the new evil world.

“Is it him?” whispered Claire nervously. “Is that my Arlo?”

Asura sighed and turned to John.

“Can we just kill her, Master?” she whispered, frustrated. “She’s an eternal pain in the ass.”

John shook his head in disagreement before turning to Claire.

“Yes, that’s Arlo, Mrs. Ortega, but you need to be quiet. Arlo isn’t the same boy we knew; if he hears us, all those monsters will attack.”

Claire’s eyes lit up.

“Arlo! My son!”

Claire stood and was preparing to run when John reached out and touched her arm.

“Arrrrrrr....”

Claire's body froze before she could step, and she fell to the ground. As Claire lay on the floor, her mouth opened and closed like a fish gasping for air, her wide eyes looking all around as she lay unable to move.

John leaned over her and whispered in her ear.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Ortega, but I tried to warn you to be quiet.”

As John continued watching Arlo, Asura leaned over Claire and whispered.

“If it were up to me, I’d cut your eyes out and send you into the storm like the senseless fool you are.”

Suddenly, John moved to the other side of the fountain, leaving Asura alone with Claire. As he watched Arlo enter the clothing store, Asura continued speaking to Arlo’s mother.

“Try holding your breath when the Huturo and the Vampires catch wind of your scent. Maybe they’ll take you for dead and walk past, but I’m hoping they find out you’re alive. Nothing would please me more than seeing them feast on your guts.”

Asura ran to John’s side and left Claire lying catatonic on the floor.

“Where did he go?” asked Asura.

“He’s inside the shop,” replied John.

The two watched Arlo emerge from the shop, covered in fresh blood. He walked over to the tree and began talking – to no one.

“Who is he talking to?” asked John.

Asura was unable to see anyone. Suddenly, an invisible force knocked Arlo to the ground.

“Is this an attack from the Angels?” asked John.

“Wait a minute,” replied Asura.

Asura reached into her robe and retrieved a tiny leather bag. She stuck her index finger inside and covered it in black sparkling sand.

“Le-vei no-kelu!”

The old woman closed her eyes and rubbed the sand on her eyelid. When she opened her eyes, she smiled wickedly.

“What is it?” asked John. “What do you see?”

“Death,” replied Asura. “Arlo is alone.”

“What do you mean?”

“The girl Isadora is a spirit now.
