The Wrong Cake
by Katie Fforde
âI do understand the concept of âstuck in trafficâ,â said Betsy into her phone. âHow far away are you? Gah!â He must have gone into a tunnel, she thought as she was cut off.
âThat didnât sound good,â said the only other person in the foyer, an attractive man in a suit, who she took to be the manager of the hotel.
Had she groaned out loud? She hadnât meant to. âItâs the worst! The cake that Iâve made for a wedding today probably wonât get here in time.â She threw her hands in the air in despair. âThen the bride will go on to my website to leave a dreadful review, and my tiny, precious business will die!â
The manager seemed confused. âIâm sorry. When I saw you, I thought you were one of the bridesmaids.â
She gave a rueful laugh. âItâs the orange dress that suits no one â a dead giveaway! But I also made the cake. And I care more about that because thatâs my business. Iâm only a bridesmaid for today. Thank goodness.â
Thinking of the bridezilla upstairs in a bridal suite, surrounded by a make-up artist, a hair-dresser and a troupe of her âclosest friendsâ made Betsy shudder. Did Chelsea have some sort of hold over them all, like she did over Betsy, because she was making the cake and needed a good review? At least the dresses had pockets they could slip a phone into. But it turned out this was so the brideâs attendants could be summoned at any time, even from the ladiesâ loo.
Sheâd been surprised to be asked to be a bridesmaid â she had only met Chelsea recently through a mutual friend. But when sheâd been told that all the bridesmaids had to chip in for the brideâs spa day she understood why so many had been asked. The spa had been outrageously expensive. Betsy had been heartily relieved that she had a genuine reason not to go, so only had to contribute to Chelseaâs five-star package that cost the same as a small second-hand car, without having to shell out for her own as well.
If only sheâd just agreed to do the cake and not got sucked into being a bridesmaid, she could have just delivered the cake and not involved anyone else. But sheâd been delayed finishing it and the icing needed to set before she could transport it so sheâd had to ask her brother to help. What could she do to save this situation now?
âThereâs a lovely cake for the wedding thatâs happening a couple of hours from now, in the orangery at the other end of the house,â said the manager, âbut I donât suppose that helps.â
Betsyâs mind whirled like a fidget spinner. âI think that could help a lot!â
âI really donât see how,â he replied. âIâm Rob, by the way.â
âBetsy. Couldnât we quickly borrow it? Just for the photos! Unless itâs totally different, of course. Chelsea probably wonât remember what she ordered, she wasnât all that interested.
