Chapter

Eight

Though Elizabeth loved her sisters, she was grateful to be in a room on her own. She desperately needed the privacy and quiet to reflect, and both those things had been in short supply the last several months. Along with warmth, food, and other necessities.

Elizabeth wrinkled her nose. She'd done a very poor job of taking care of her sisters, but perhaps this was the answer to her prayers. No, not perhaps. She must not sink into ungratefulness. God's ways were mysterious, after all, and perhaps he had judged their hearts rather than their actions and led Elizabeth to Darcy for this very reason.

It was ironic, in a way. For would she have ever met Darcy again, much less inadvertently prompted him to propose, if she had not been trying to steal from him?

That wasn't irony. That was a divine sense of humor. She just hoped there was no more amusement to be had at her expense.

There was a light tap on the door. Since Elizabeth was pacing anyway, she opened it herself, unsurprised to find Darcy there.

“I wanted to see if you were well, and say goodnight before I retired for the evening,” he said in a soft voice.

“I am very well. And I must thank you again for rescuing my sisters. They are in very happy spirits.”

He nodded, and they stared at each other. Elizabeth didn't want to assume, but she thought she felt some type of hesitation from him. Perhaps. . .

Heart beating a little faster, she said, “Would you like to come in?”

She stepped back enough for him to slip in the room, and he did, closing the door quietly behind him.

The way he was looking at her made Elizabeth nervous. She began to babble. “They gave me a very good report on the gentleman who assisted them. Mr. Harris? They said he was the soul of courtesy and efficiency. You really must introduce us so I can thank him in person. Or perhaps a note would be better?” She pressed the hand to her cheek, a little flustered. “I hope I don't sound foolish—”

“Elizabeth.”

His quiet speaking of her name silenced her.

She closed her eyes for a moment, giving up, and when she opened them she stepped into his arms. She was that attuned to him, after all. This inexplicable understanding that hovered between them. She wanted nothing more than to be held in his arms, for his strength and reassurance to bolster her.

It also didn't surprise her when Darcy lowered his head and kissed her, his arms tightening with that delightful strength and possessiveness, cradling her as if he would allow no harm to befall her ever again.

It was such a pretty illusion.

She slipped her hands around the back of his neck, reveling in the silk of his hair, the heat of his hard body, mourning the fact that it was not in her to simply sit back and wait for him to handle the problem of Mr. Bitters. It would be the most intelligent thing to do, perhaps.
