ALEX

I frown, my finger tapping the edge of my open laptop. It’s not even switched on. Professor Sanderson is droning on about some assignment, but I can’t concentrate on a single word. My attention keeps flitting to the empty seat where a certain delicious redhead should be.

She hasn’t missed a class in three years. I tap my phone, waking it, but there are no new notifications. She’s never texted me before, why would she start now? My jaw clenches in annoyance. I haven’t seen her since Saturday afternoon when she fell asleep in my arms. Waking up that morning with a smile on my face, I’d rolled over, hoping for another round, only to find the bed empty. No note. No message. Gone.

I shouldn’t be annoyed. I’ve never spent the night with a woman before. It’s one of my rules and they all know it. Was that why she left? Did she think I was going to kick her out? My brow furrows. Why wasn’t I going to?

Fuck. The sex was incredible, and I spent most of yesterday hanging around in my room replaying it over and over. I haven’t jerked off that much in one day since I was a teenager. Sasha fucking Darryn.

Several times on Sunday, I thought about trying to find her. I was even ready to go to the Hive. But I didn’t. She left, so she clearly wanted space. Plus, I figured I’d see her today in class. I tap my phone again. Still nothing.

I shove the unease down. She’s going to have to see me at some point, because we still have to figure out who’s got her goddamn diary. The only person who knew I had it was Evan Rose, and I haven’t seen him recently. I think it’s time I paid the freshman a visit. Slipping my phone onto my lap, I type out a quick message. It doesn’t matter if he’s busy. As a pledge, he’ll have to make time to meet with me, even if it means walking out of a class.

His response buzzes through a few moments later confirming, and the second Professor Sanderson wraps up, I’m out of my seat and jogging up the steps toward the exit. I told Evan to meet me by the library, so as I make my way there to wait for him, I pull up the profile for the person who posted Sasha’s diary. There’s no information that could give any clues. I mean, of course there isn’t.

“Alex?”

I look up and slide my phone into my pocket as Evan approaches warily. “Hey.”

“Everything okay?” he asks.

I eye him, wondering whether his nerves are because the president of the Alphas has summoned him or whether it’s because he’s done something he shouldn’t have. It had better not be the latter.

“I need to know if you told anyone about the messages I sent you.”

His face pales. “I didn’t tell anyone. I swear.”

I hold out my hand. “Give me your phone.”

With shaking fingers, he unlocks it, thrusting at me.
