TWELVE

Abigail

I watch T.V. with my bat close and my largest cast iron skillet in my lap. At least twice I realize I should call the police, or that I should turn Danya in., but considering the kind of people that he and his family handle, it seems better to let them do what has to be done, even if Danya’s working is outside the law.

Not rational thinking, I admit that. My dad wouldn’t call it close to plausible deniability and my mother would be horrified. Their sweet daughter all wrapped up in business she shouldn’t know about, let alone be a part of.

It should bother me that a man I like, a man I was begging to steal a kiss from less than three hours ago, just went to kill someone, or multiple someones, but he was honest about it. He’s never hidden his giant red flags.

After a bit, I get through a shower, keeping my weapons close, then change for bed, pulling on a giant t-shirt that slides down my shoulder and some comfortable cotton shorts that are too short for my ass not to hang out.

An alarm on my phone goes off and I stare at it. “Huh. Two weeks is up, Danya. No more pretend boyfriend duties.”

Does that mean he won’t come back? No, he didn’t set an alarm telling him when to be done with me. He’s not that anal. He already said he didn’t like rules. But still. I play with my fingers.

Two hard thuds echo through my door and I grab my skillet, leaving my bat behind the couch. As I stand against the door, I remember when I was little and my dad told me that we were going to play a game, a game that meant I couldn’t be seen in windows and had to sneak around the house like a spy.

Later, Mom said it was because he lost a big case and he didn’t want the press to see me. Something about the way she said it, slurring her words thanks to alcohol, made me question it then, but now I wonder if Dad was hiding me from someone worse. Was I always going to end up either with or running from someone like Danya or running from them?

“Open. The. Door.,” Danya’s voice orders.

I open it and he falls to the floor. He groans. There’s blood on him–guess it’s good he wore black–he’s in pain. His twin stands at the door. “Did my job, brother. Now I have my own woman to see to.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“Oh, nice to meet you again-kinda. I’m Edmon,” the twin says, smiling, and reaching forward to shake my hand. “Your cupcakes are amazing.”

“Mine,” Danya says, swatting at his twin’s hand. “This is my woman. Go to yours.”

“Touchy-touchy. Knew it wasn’t fake. Worst lie I’ve ever heard,” Edmon says before walking out and shutting the door, hitting Danya’s foot on the way out.

I try to pick Danya up and he helps me, wrapping an arm around my shoulder as I get him to his feet.
