Chapter Five

The next week Eddie and I continued practicing my soccer skills. Eddie would stand in goal and I would kick the ball and try to score. We worked some more on my footwork, too. I couldn’t believe how much better I had gotten.

At recess one day at school we played soccer, as usual. This time, I was on Dylan’s team. Before, neither Dylan nor Josh wanted me on their team. Now, I was one of the first boys they picked!

I was playing a pretty good game. Then, I got a surprise. I looked over and there was Eddie! He was sitting on a lawn chair holding a lemonade drink in his hand. He had his sunglasses on and one of my baseball caps. He gave me a big grin and a thumbs up. When recess was over and everyone went running back into the school, I ran up to him.

“Eddie! Did you see me play soccer?” I asked, excitedly.

“I sure did, kiddo!” he said. “You played pretty good if I say so myself! I just had to come and watch you. I wanted to see how you were playing after all the practice we’ve been doing.”

“I like playing soccer at recess now!” I said.

“Great, kiddo! I’ll let you get back to school now,” said Eddie. “I’m going home to clean the bathroom. See you after school!”

After school, Dylan asked me to go to a movie with him and his older sister the following Saturday. His older sister was eighteen so she could take us to the movie.

“It’s that new movie that’s out,” said Dylan. “I can’t wait to see it!”

“I’d like to see it, too!” I said. “I’ll ask my mom. I’m sure she’ll say yes.”

Mom did say yes. She had met Dylan’s sister a lot of times and knew she would take good care of us. When Saturday morning finally came, I went downstairs. Mom and Dad were having coffee on the patio. Mom was still in her pyjamas.

“Good Morning, Tyler!” she said, smiling happily.

“Mom, you’re still in your pyjamas!” I said. That was really unusual.

“Yes, I am!” she said. “Your dad’s been helping me with the housework for the last few weeks. I have more time to relax now.”

I looked at Dad. He scratched his head with that same confused look on his face. I wished I could tell him that it was Eddie helping with the housework but of course, I couldn’t. The funny thing was that Dad was actually starting to help out more with the housework on his own!

“Uh, yeah!” said Dad. “I’ll wash the dishes after breakfast today.” Mom gave him a nice smile and patted him on the arm.

In a few hours, Dylan, his sister and I were in the movie theatre. His sister’s friend came along too. Before the movie started, his sister and her friend chatted and Dylan and I chatted.

Then I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around. It was Eddie! He had a big bucket of popcorn and some red licorice.
