What was she thinking? She could not deny the truth of the matter any longer. She was attracted to Darcy. She trusted him like no other. She longed for a night of passionâwith him.
Nevertheless, did she truly know what she was about? Before she had realised what was happening, she had invited Darcy to her room.
Elizabethâs curiosity finally had won out. Was it one too many assemblies or private dinner parties where she was forced to sit with the other matrons in the room, pretending to understand what they meant when they spoke of the sexual proclivities of men and women and marital relationsâthe pleasant and the not so pleasant aspects? Heaven forbid when she found herself in the awkward position of giving advice to prospective brides.
Elizabeth had suffered enough. Enough of being vulnerable and defenceless against men who looked at her evocatively, spoke to her suggestively.
She trusted Darcy. A clandestine affair such as she had proposed would require the utmost discretion. It was only one night, and no one must ever know. No other person existed upon whose discretion she would have confidently depended. Who better than a man she had come to esteem to accompany her on her long-anticipated widowâs rite of passage?
She prepared for bed with the utmost care, donning her silken robe and nightgown. Elizabeth sat in front of the mirror and watched as the flicker of the candles on the vanity danced with the beads in her robe. It had been a part of her wedding trousseau, yet she had never worn it. This would make up for the wedding night she never had.
Elizabeth picked up her brush and slowly stroked her long dark tresses. She was indeed as nervous as a new bride. Elizabeth had thrown caution to the wind in inviting Darcy to her room. Now she was unsure. Would he be able to discern that she was nowhere near as experienced as she should be? What would he think of her then?
A light tap at the door signalled her decisive moment.
Darcy entered the room to behold the breath-taking vision of the woman he loved, seductively attired and looking more beautiful than even he had imagined. Except for his dinner jacket, he remained fully dressed even down to his boots. Whilst he had agreed to her scheme to meet her in her apartment, he did not know what to expect. A man who had felt less might have immediately seized such a tempting prospect as she presented.
He was determined to follow her lead. To his surprise, Elizabeth possessed none of the confidence she had displayed earlier when she invited him there. After a quarter of an hour of idle chatter that served no purpose whatsoever in furthering the nightâs cause, Darcy realised a different tack was called for.
âWhy did you invite me to your apartment, Elizabeth?â Darcy asked, still standing in the same spot as when he had first entered the room. Elizabeth had yet to relinquish her spot, as well.
âI think that is rather obvious,â Elizabeth stated uneasily.
