“What a shitty day,” I muttered to myself as I used the keys to unlock the front door of my house and walked inside. It was late at night, even for a night owl like me. And I knew that tomorrow wouldn’t be any easier considering the murder investigation set out in front of us.

I only hoped that Grey would be able to find his way back to his apartment all right. That he didn’t fall asleep on the way.

I knew that was a ridiculous worry—and that my subconscious was looking for a reason to text him. Reach out and hear from him again. The truth was before we had received the bad news from the captain, the night had been going just fine.

I had it bad. I needed to get control of my emotions, but the urge to contact Grey wouldn’t leave me.

I had half decided I was going to text him anyway, just to make sure that everything was okay, when my phone began to buzz in my hands. I looked down, half expecting to see a call from Grey, only to frown when I saw that it was Cynthia, my ex-wife. Why in the world would she reach out to me at this time of the night?

Something must be wrong.

I swiped to answer the call. “Cynthia? What’s wrong?”

“Why does something always have to be wrong for me to call you?” she asked, her voice light and amused. There had been a time, years ago when I had been in love with that voice. As raw as I was right now, the memories stung me particularly hard.

“Because it is God awful o’clock in the morning?” I said, wryly.

“Which begs the question: why are you just getting home now?”

My eyebrows raised and I was about to demand how the hell Cynthia knew that, but then I remembered. She had been nagging me to get her email address off of her doorbell app. Likely, she had been alerted the moment that I stepped up to the stoop.

I let out a frustrated growl. “Okay, I’ll contact the automated doorbell service and knock you off my plan. I hear you, loud and clear.”

Cynthia laughed again.

Perhaps some people would think it was odd that I had a friendly relationship with my ex-wife. Well, I would have personally described it as cordial, but it had been a long time since the two of us had been at each other’s throats. The fact was, we had always gotten along better as friends than as lovers.

I had always known that I was the main reason for our divorce. I had blamed it on my job and certainly, that hadn’t helped. But considering my growing feelings for Grey I was starting to think that there was another aspect of our divorce that I hadn’t wanted to admit to myself.

“I’ve heard that promise before,” Cynthia said, lightly. “I am curious, though, why are you getting home so late. Out on a hot date?”

She sounded almost hopeful. Then again, she had remarried within a year of our divorce, and was still very happy with her second marriage.
