What does a correlational study like the Burtson and Stichler article tell us? How can we use it in practice or as a basis for other research? Correlational studies tell us whether or not a statistically significant relationship exists between variables and the direction of that relationship. Correlational studies are considered exploratory in nature, shedding light on how variables might be connected and whether or not one variable may predict another. When no other research is available, correlational studies may provide insight into human behavior and allow us to consider those variables in our practice. In the preceding case study, as nurse burnout increased, nurse caring decreased. It makes sense in the context of other research and theory to suggest that nurses who are burned out may behave in a less caring manner. We can make policies and consider changing practice if the correlational evidence is consistent from study to study.

Correlational research often provides a foundation for designing and testing interventions—that is, once we know that one variable (burnout) may influence another variable (nurse caring), we can design an experimental study to determine if there is a cause-and-effect relationship. Experimental studies include controlling and manipulating the independent variable (nurse burnout) to determine the effect on the dependent variable (nurse caring). Only experimental studies allow us to determine cause (burnout) and effect (nurse caring).
