The store was a madhouse. The snow was falling heavier now. I tuck my pint of bourbon in my bag and call a cab. “Fucking great. An hour plus for a cab.”

I walk over with my three grocery bags and stand under the cover of the crowded bus stop. I read the graffiti-covered map. It looks like a straight shot to my condo.

The crowd at the bus stop swelled. “This bus better be on time,” a lady standing beside me said.

Then it was as if the floodgates opened as people seemingly came out of nowhere. I look down the road and see the bus heading our way.

The bus stops and we line up, then the lady turns to me. “Is that you on the side of this bus?”

I look at the side of the bus and see myself and the news crew all smiling in a promo photo for action news at 5,7 and 11. “Yes, that would be me.”

She stops and gives me a hard look and laughs. “And you are riding the bus? Damn... you need a raise,” she said as she steps onto the warm bus. I pull my hood over my head and follow in her judgmental wake. My life sucks right now.

The bus let me out in front of my building. I couldn’t stop glancing at the passengers. I think I’ll forever be paranoid, especially after that big-mouthed lady said that. Two men kept eyeing me. Now they know I live somewhere here in one of these buildings. I swear I’ll have a car by the end of the week.
