“What was all that?” Murton said.

Virgil shook his head. “Politics. Apparently, we’ve got to do a little butt smooching with Senator Shaw.”

“Why?”

“Because he’s backing Mac on the legalization plan. It’s no big deal. He wants in the house, so we’re going to let him.”

“What about the safe?” Rosencrantz said.

“He’s the sole heir, Rosie. He gets to take whatever he wants as long as it doesn’t impact our investigation.”

“Did you just say butt smooching?” Murton asked.

“I’m practicing,” Virgil said. “That fucking swear jar is killing me.”

“I’d keep practicing,” Ross said.

Virgil ignored the comment, then said, “Are you guys sure there wasn’t anything in the house that could explain what these killers were after?”

“We’re positive, Jonesy,” Rosencrantz said. “We took the place apart. You’ll probably get an earful from the senator when he sees what kind of condition the house is in.”

“That doesn’t surprise me,” Virgil said. “So far I’ve gotten an earful every time we’ve had a conversation.” Then to Murton: “Tell me about this company Med Cap was working with. The one you mentioned earlier. You said something about a life-changing medication.”

Murton nodded at his brother. “I don’t know if it means anything or not, I simply thought of the five companies Med Cap was working with, this one was the most interesting. Plus, it was the one they took on right before they started dumping their other clients.”

“What makes it so interesting?” Rosencrantz said.

“Jonesy just said it. They’re developing a medication that, if successful, would change lives.”

“What is it?” Ross asked.

Murton answered Ross’s question, but he was looking at Virgil as he did. “It’s a new type of opioid-based pain killer. It’s just as strong as Oxy or any other hard-core meds on the market…or the street, for that matter.”

Virgil chuffed at his brother’s statement. “Great. Just what we need. Another opioid drug floating around out there. I can see why Med Cap started dumping their other clients. There’s plenty of money to be made in the opioid market. But I’ll tell you what I don’t see: What makes this company different from all the other manufacturers?”

“Because apparently, this company has cracked the code,” Murton said. “They’ve developed an opioid that is safe, effective, and…here’s the best part, truly non-addictive. According to the people I spoke with at Med Cap, you can take this stuff like Advil and never get hooked. There’s no associated high, no tolerance issues leading to an urge to take more, and no chance of overdose. If it’s everything they say it is, both acute and chronic pain will be a thing of the past.”

“That’s why you said what you did in the truck,” Virgil said. “You were talking about what I went through with the pills.”

“I was,” Murton said. “And I’ll tell you something else. Whoever brings this stuff to market is going to be a multibillionaire practically overnight.” Then, a little dryly: “Think that’s worth killing over?”

Virgil bit into his lower lip. “I do. I’ll tell you something, and I’m pretty sure everyone in this room knows this, but getting off those pills was pure torture.
