Cora looked at Virgil and Murton. “So a former army pal of yours, this Avery guy—a suspected contract hitter out of Miami, no less—shows up at your bar right out of the blue, then the same night the guy who had previously disfigured him for life gets burned to death in his own home by what sounds very much like a flamethrower…the same weapon used against Avery.”

“That’s pretty much the gist of it,” Murton said.

“Where is he now?”

“We’ve got Becky looking into that,” Virgil said.

“This seems like something you might have mentioned earlier.”

“There was no way to make the connection, Cora,” Virgil said. “The only reason we had Becky checking on him was because he showed up at the bar.”

“A contract hitter…in our city,” she said, her voice strained.

“Your taking it out of context,” Virgil said. “This meeting is the first time a few of the facts have come together. You know as well as I do that he’s not the only bad guy out there.”

Cora nodded stiffly, conceding the point. Then she looked at Ross and Rosencrantz. “Get any intel you can from Becky. Find this Avery guy and get him in here before—”

Virgil cleared his throat. “Uh, Maybe Murton and I should take the lead on that. We know who he is, and even though the facts suggest—”

“Don’t even think about it, Jonesy,” Cora said. “You two are on the Wright case. Period. End of discussion. This mobile voting thing is picking up traction on the floor and Mac wants the death of the son of one of our state’s senators dealt with in the most expeditious manner possible. Are we clear on that?”

“Crystal,” Virgil said, his voice dry and caustic.

If Cora caught Virgil’s tone, she ignored it. She looked at Ross and Rosencrantz. “Get to it. Now.” Then she looked at Virgil and Murton. “You two know what needs to be done. Make it happen.” With that she stood and left the room.

Murton told Ross and Rosencrantz he’d let Becky know who had point on what. They thanked him and followed Cora out. Virgil started to say something, but Murton held up his hand. “Hold on. Let’s give it a minute.”

“Why?”

“To make sure everyone is out of earshot.”

“Earshot of what?” Virgil said.

“I’ll tell you something, Jonesy…you’ve got a lot of great qualities, but sometimes you can be pretty impatient.” Murton stood, moved to the conference room door and checked the hallways. They were empty. He closed the door anyway. When he sat back down, he turned his phone over, screen up, on the table. He pressed the speaker button and said, “Did you get all that?”

“Every word,” Becky said.

Virgil looked down and grinned.

“Give Ross and Rosencrantz anything they ask for,” Murton told her. Becky said she would.

“But Becks?” Virgil said.

“Yeah?”

“Make sure we get it too.”

“Of course.” Then, “Hey, Murton?”

“Yes, dear?”

“You called her Meems…”

“Yeah, she sort of digs me, is all.”

“I get it. But, if you want me to keep digging you, start calling her by her real name.
