Sandy was going to ask for an explanation of the governor’s statement, but she sensed the energy of the conversation had changed, so she let it go, excusing herself to go take care of the boys. “Wyatt will be up any minute,” she said.

The governor told her goodbye and spent a few seconds watching her walk away. Then he tossed his arm around Virgil’s shoulder and directed him back toward the front drive. Virgil let himself be steered along, and eventually said, “Mac? You mentioned there was something else.”

“Hmm. I did, didn’t I?”

“What was it?”

Virgil waited for his response as they walked. They made it all the way out to the town car before the governor spoke. He opened the door, climbed in and made the window disappear again. “It’ll keep. We’ll discuss it over dinner. I’m looking forward to it, Detective.” The window reappeared, the trooper gave Virgil another nod, and the town car backed out of the driveway and made its way down the gravel road. Virgil stood and watched until the car was out of sight. Mac rarely addressed him by his formal title when they were alone. He knew something was up.

He just didn’t know what.
