Chapter 13

Mandy’s cozy kitchen was the perfect place to have a good girlfriend chat. Mandy loved color and the area was done in primary colors. Disney characters were present in the canisters on the counter along with the matching tea towels and the toaster shaped like Mickey’s head.

Mandy plunked her body down on the chair, grabbed a napkin and began to fan her face with it.

“I can’t believe my ears. I thought for sure you would back out at the last minute,” Mandy claimed as wiggled her pinkie finger in her ear. “I’m sure I heard you say you’re definitely going to rent a room to Roy Bradley. After all this pussyfooting around, making excuses not be alone with him, you’ve actually made the move and invited the man inside your home. Your ex-husband! Granted he has aged well and his body is still in pretty good shape.”

She tapped her finger on her chin and a thoughtful look crossed her face. “Yes, indeed, that is a major point in his favor. He could definitely be the one you need right...”

Before her friend could extrapolate further, Joette smacked the palm of her hand on the wooden tabletop, then shook it to relieve the sting. “Stop with drama already. Here I am keeping you in the loop, per your request, and you’re going on like an over-aged Camille. The only thing you haven’t done is put the back of your hand on your forehead and fake a swoon. To make matters worse your brain is headed in a direction I don’t care to follow.”

“I know you’re keeping me in the loop. I appreciate that. But, in the past you’ve been known to change your mind. Another thing, how do you know where my brain was going? I only said a few words before you cut me off.”

Joette squirmed in her chair. She came here for some good girl talk and advice. Right now she was downright uncomfortable with where this advice was heading.

“They were more than a few words. I could tell by your Cheshire grin. You’ve heard about a picture being worth a thousand words? Your facial expression was worth a whole short story.”

Mandy threw her hands in the air. “Girlfriend, you have to admit this is a radical change from what’s been going on since that man hit town. And, it is a very good change. I mean he’s in the Fork & Spoon a lot, mostly when you’re on. He must check the parking lot for your car. Then you tell me he asked to rent a room at your place. Not only that but you’ve agreed to do it. I mean that’s something I never expected to hear.

“What brought about the change? It must’ve been something that happened during that trip out to look at the property. Are you holding out on me?”

Mandy leaned back in the chair and scanned Joette’s face and noted the blush start at the base of her neck and end up at her hairline.
