It was a long, solitary day riding the fence line, but he knew the weak spots and made notes to pass to Rory to order the supplies. As he let Darby set the pace for the trip back to the ranch, his thoughts turned to Annie and hiring the therapist to come to the ranch. It had to be expensive and why would she do that especially when she planned on selling the place? If only he’d been able to talk to her before she left; maybe he could have changed her mind about the impending sale.

After another quarter of a mile or so, he took his hat off and wiped his brow with his shirtsleeve and that was when it dawned on him. She had invited him up to the house to talk. If he hadn’t been such a stubborn mule, maybe there would have been time to sort this out and convince her not to return to Boston. Was he too late or might it be possible to stop the horse from throwing a shoe? That was a poor metaphor for what needed to be done. He took off at a gallop, in search of Mary. Hopefully she’d have some of the answers he needed.
