CHAPTER 17
AMELIAâS DEATH HAD CAST an ominous feeling around the campus. Even the skies hadnât brightened since that day. We were placed under a curfew, and it was recommended that everyone traveled in pairs. Felicity was still under suspicion.
After dinner one night, I was in the gymâs shower room with Barry. We had gotten developed somewhat of a routine. Basically, we would clean for the first twenty minutes or so and then talk for the rest of the time. We talked about our childhood and our families. Barry and I were both only children, but besides that we had nothing in common. He was from the South. I wasnât. His favorite color was green. My favorite color was black. He liked the outdoors. I didnât. I liked talking to him, though. In fact, I kind of wished for custodial duty everyday so that we could have this alone time together, but Iâd never admit that to anyone.
Barry leaned against the sink while I sat down on a bench.
âHow are you sleeping?â he asked, staring at me.
I still got nervous when he looked at me for too long. I donât know what it was, but there was something about him that I couldnât help but be attracted to.
âItâs fine,â I said, shrugging. I didnât want to admit that I only took showers now when Felicity was in the room or how I kept my back towards the bathroom door at night so that I wouldnât see the gaping black abyss at night and think about whatever monster it was that killed Amelia.
âHaving nightmares still?â Barry asked. He said still because heâd sworn the night that I spent in his dorm I had been screaming in my sleep. I didnât remember. I wouldnât be surprised if I had, but it felt weird that Barry knew something about my sleeping patterns. It felt intimate.
âI donât think so,â I said. âWell, Felicity hasnât said anything about it if I had.â
In fact, Felicity hadnât been saying much these past few days. She had been missing class, and she spent a lot of her time in bed facing the wall with her back to me.
Barry nodded. He crossed his arms against his chest. It looked like there was something more he wanted to say. Especially about that night. That morning I noticed that I had an extra blanket over me which meant that Barry had been awake and I hadnât. What else had he done when I was asleep? I hope I wasnât an ugly sleeper. I couldnât keep thinking about that night. It was one night. A week ago, Iâm sure Barry didnât think about it as much as I was.
"People think you went to see the Fates,â I said, deciding to change the subject. The gymâs shower room was huge, but Barry and I were only a few feet away and the tension between us was palpable.
He raised an eyebrow. âIs that what they say?â
I nodded.
Barry didnât say anything for a while. When he
