CHAPTER 17

THE BAND IS BACK TOGETHER

“Jacob?” Scout said in shock. “What are you doing here?”

“I could ask you the same thing.”

Ruby grumbled then looked sideways. “Are we really doing this again?”

“I don’t know,” Jacob replied then shrugged. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to help.”

“Jacob, we need to talk,” Scout cut in. “They’re gonna attack. The flyers are coming.”

“I knew we couldn’t trust her.”

“Are you kidding me? I almost died helping you.”

“But you didn’t, did you?”

“I’m not doing this.” Ruby turned her back and headed toward her ship. “Scout, talk to your stupid friend.”

“Ruby, wait,” Scout called after her then turned to face Jacob. “Dude, what the hell?”

“What? She just strolls down here like everything is okay. How are you not suspicious?”

“Because of what she told me.”

“Yeah, and what’s that?”

“Her people are dying. They don’t have a choice anymore. They’re fighting for their lives. We have to stop Harold.”

“That didn’t go so well the first time. In case you forgot.”

Ruby stepped out from behind a tree and stopped in front of them. “Well, that’s where we are, asshole.”

Scout half-smiled. “Are you gonna help?”

“What the hell can we do?”

“We should get Devin and Cayden.”

Jacob laughed. “What the hell are they gonna do?”

“Five heads is better than three.”

“I’m not sure about that. But okay, whatever,” Jacob replied. “Is that good enough for you?” he asked Ruby.

She ignored him and started walking. “Scout, let’s go.”

Laughing, Jacob followed behind them. “I missed you too, Ruby,” he said.

Beneath the moonlight, they made their way through the forest and across the field to where Cayden and Devin lived. Scout led the way with Jacob straggling in the back like a toddler throwing a fit.

It was a cool night and besides the hum of bugs and their footfalls, it was completely silent. Ruby anxiously trailed behind Scout, constantly checking over her shoulder and shooting daggers toward Jacob. She thought they’d buried all of the bad blood but even Scout didn’t give her the warmest welcome.

“I’m sorry,” Scout mumbled as if he could read her mind.

“For what?” Ruby played dumb.

“I missed you, Ruby. I didn’t mean any of that other stuff I said. I’m an idiot.”

“Yeah, you are.” Ruby stepped beside him and tilted her head to the side. “I guess I forgive you.”

“Get a room,” Jacob groaned and shoved past them.

“Shut up,” they both replied in unison.

“Okay, but while you two are playing find Scout’s noodle, I’ll be saving the world. That is what we’re doing, right?”

Scout shook his head and huffed. “Let’s keep going.”

Devin’s house was a little more than a mile away, but it felt like they’d been walking all night. Ruby enjoyed the little jaunt and soaked up every minute of being outside. She loved the feeling of the night air on her face, but it wasn’t enough to overshadow why she was back. Every time she relaxed the thought of war popped into her mind and jolted her back to reality.

Scout would look back from time to time just to watch her, telling himself that it wasn’t creepy.
