“In my Father’s house are many mansions.” (John 14:2)

Green was born a slave on a plantation in North Carolina. When he was a young man, both he and his master, James Madison Flake, heard the gospel and chose to be baptized. After being baptized, Green went with James to join the Saints in Nauvoo.

When the Saints were moving to the West, Green was chosen as one of a select few to be part of the vanguard party, the first wagons to travel to Utah. Green was known for being strong, trustworthy, and hardworking. He helped construct roads and bridges along the way to make a path for future pioneers. He also drove Brigham Young’s wagon and was in the first wagon to enter the Salt Lake Valley. In Utah, Green eventually became a free man, had a family, and owned a farm. He was often honored and remembered as one of the first pioneers to reach Utah and was a popular speaker at Pioneer Day celebrations.

Despite trials from living as a slave for much of his life in a time of widespread racism, Green remained an active member of his ward and a faithful Saint to the end of his days. When he passed away, many important Utah newspapers published the event. Green was buried with his wife beneath a gravestone he carved himself bearing the scripture verse “In my Father’s house are many mansions,” a final testament to Green’s faith in eternal life.
