The moment the door closes behind Dakota, I look back at Jason and move him out to the balcony. My baby girl doesn't need to hear any more of his bullshit.

"I love that girl with everything I am, and I will not be having you talking to her like that in her home." I use my dad voice on him though he's no longer a child.

"What?" He says, shocked.

"There was something there the day you brought her home. But I really fell in love with her when I watched how she handled what her parents did with grace. She didn't sulk and give up. Instead, she made the best of it. While you were dating, I never touched her and would never have made a move if you were still together. But we are together now, and I plan to marry her."

"You can't be serious! She is my age!"

"If you loved her, really, truly loved her, you wouldn't need to see what else is out there because you wouldn't care. But you knew something was missing, and you were trying to figure out what it was."

I've never said those words to him before, I just let him go on and on about how he needed a bit of freedom before settling down. But I knew he had no intention of taking her back, even if he hadn't admitted it to himself yet.

"Are you really going to marry her?"

"As soon as I can get her down the aisle, you bet I am, and regardless of the situation, I expect you to stand up with me and be my best man," I tell him. He fights a smile, not wanting to be happy about any part of this situation.

He looks out over the Vegas skyline, and I can see his wheels turning from here. I give him the few moments he needs to process it all. This wasn't how I wanted him to find out, but it's better he knows now.

"I want you both to be happy, I really do. It's all I wanted for you, even growing up, to find someone to love and who loves you. But I just don't want to see it. It's weird and will take me a long time to get used to it, if I ever do."

"When you are in our house, I make no promises. But when we are at your place or in public, you have a deal."

"I can live with that," he sighs. "You take care of her and if you hurt her, my father or not, I will kick your ass, old man."

I just laugh because anyone who is protective of my girl is good in my books and there is no way in hell, I'm going to hurt her because hurting her means ripping my own heart out first.

After watching him go, I then turn to stare out at the city. Today I plan to take her out on a date and want to spoil her with clothes, shoes, makeup, whatever she wants.
