CHAPTER 9
RYAN
My hands clenched inside of my pockets, and my jaw clicked from how hard I clenched it.
âCoach?â my assistant, Red Bridges, called out for the third time. I frowned. Drawing my attention away from where the cheer squad was practicing.
âWhat?â I clipped like an asshole. Redâs eyes widened.
âI asked if you were okay,â he calmly said.
Red Bridges was a great guy. A man who knew how to keep his cool in any given situation. It was one of the reasons I had hired him to be my right-hand man. He also happened to be an ex-teammate of my mine from my college days. Weâd been roommates. He knew me as well as I knew him. Weâd never lost touch, even when Iâd gone to play pro and heâd gone back to his hometown of Beech Grove to coach his high school football team.
âIâm fine,â I muttered, trying to force my eyes back on my players on the field, but the group to the far end kept distracting me.
Or more than anything, it was Alicia.
After dropping her off yesterday, I went to practice feeling like a new man.
That lasted for about an hour.
The moment the cheer squad got on the field, that thing inside me, the possessive, overprotective being, went into overdrive. The thoughts that swirled in my head were fucking crazy. Each one worse than the last as I watched her talk to other guys.
She wasnât flirting or trying to charm them; it just came as easily as breathing to her. Not that I actually believed she was trying to get them to smile and talk to her. She was out there practicing. Logically, I knew that. But that dark thing in me swirled venom in my veins as I watched those assholes touch her, toss her up in the air. All the crazy-ass stunts had all but given me a heart attack.
My body seemed to be more attuned to hers now that Iâd had a taste. By the time my players were gone, and she was leaving practice, I was about to come out of my skin. Iâd texted her Iâd pick her up for lunch after her class. Sheâd glanced over at me with a surprised look, and Iâd waited with my heart in my goddamn throat. I was almost positive she was going to deny me and turn me down. Thankfully, my sweet girl showed me some much-needed mercy.
Iâd grabbed food and picked her up. Weâd gone to park at a field that belonged to the school. It was on the far end and a spot I knew for a fact anyone hardly ever used. The football team used it once or twice during summer training for team building.
Iâd set out a picnic for us on the bed of my truck. Weâd sat together, side by side, and ate as we talked. Everything she shared had me falling more and more for her. Even as I stood on the sidelines once again, distracted by the practice, I realized I had so much more to learn about her.
