From his vantage point of the hangar, he caught sight of Achem waving to him. The pilot must be ready to taxi. He pressed his hand harder against his other ear as he moved behind a small Cessna he hoped would help block some noise. “Eben, I can’t hear you. You’re cutting out.”

“Don’t…plane…” Crackling came over the line.

Plane? How did Eben know…

A surge of adrenaline spiked through him at the exact moment the thought came of danger.

He took off toward Achem, waving his arms and yelling. Achem had started to walk toward him. A fireball rose behind him just as the sound of the explosion reached Liran, sending him backward to the ground.

His next awareness was of the ringing in his ears, so loud he could only feel himself groan. Liran opened his eyes. A night sky lit by a fiery glow arched over him. He lifted his head, then regretted it. His head pounded louder. The last thing he remembered was running toward the plane.

Achem!

Liran pushed up on one arm. The world spun for a moment before settling into a smoky haze. Flames engulfed the private jet they were about to board. The faint whine of sirens pierced his muffled ears.

Achem lay on the ground nearby, unmoving.

Liran crawled over to him. “Achem.” No response. He felt for a pulse…steady. “Achem, can you hear me?”

Achem started to stir. His eyes cracked open.

Liran waited for Achem to come to full consciousness.

Achem’s gaze finally connected to his. His lips moved. “Liran…”

“Are you hurt?” Liran shifted into a crouching position. His body felt like a punching bag but nothing worse. And he was hearing things more.

“Are you?” Achem’s sardonic tone relieved Liran’s immediate concerns. Achem had taken more of the brunt of the explosion than he had.

“Nothing serious.”

Achem rolled to his side toward the blazing wreckage. He propped himself up on his elbow. “The pilot…did he…?” He glanced over his shoulder at Liran.

“I don’t think so.” When Achem shook his head and pointed to his ears, Liran shook his head.

Rescue vehicles exploded on the scene in flashes of red and yellow. A fire crew began dousing the remaining flames with foam. EMTs ran toward them.

Liran hardly noticed the one examining him. He kept a keen eye on Achem to see if they discovered anything serious.

Once checked out, they let Liran get up on his own but insisted Achem needed to be taken to the hospital for further tests.

Liran followed the wheeled stretcher carrying Achem to an ambulance. As they passed the smoking wreckage, he overheard one of the firefighters yell out that they found one body—the pilot.

He lagged back a bit to see if he could pick up on anything more while keeping Achem in his peripheral vision. The fire truck captain approached the police officer in charge, holding the charred remains of something in his hand, but Liran couldn’t make out what they were saying.

His brother’s call must have been to warn them. But how did he know? Liran picked up his steps to climb into the back of the ambulance.
