TEXT 18
sisṛkṣāyāṁ tato nābhes
tasya padmaṁ viniryayau
tan-nālaṁ hema-nalinaṁ
brahmaṇo lokam adbhutam
TRANSLATION
When the Lord [Garbhodaka-śāyī Viṣṇu] desired to create, a lotus arose from His navel. This golden lotus with its stalk became the astonishing abode of Brahmā.
COMMENTARY
This lotus stalk is known as the planet of Brahmā because, after he makes his appearance in verse 22, it serves as his place of birth and repose.
TEXT 19

vibhinnāni pṛthak pṛthak

TRANSLATION
All the ingredient elements of creation, which had previously made their appearance, remained separate from each other because they did not have the potency to combine. The first person [ādi-puruṣa], Mahā-viṣṇu, decorated with His spiritual potency, brought them together through His potency of illusion [māyā] and then entered a state of divine sleep.
COMMENTARY
Three couplets (the two couplets of verse 19 and the single couplet of verse 20) describe the process of creation according to the Third Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, during which Mahā-viṣṇu finally wakes the mass of jīvas. In two verses Brahmā describes how the Lord brings the elements together through His own energy and then goes to sleep, being indifferent to the process of creation.
