Mere seconds remained until the third scan, at two thirty. Llenn’s wristwatch had already finished its warning vibration.

They took out their scan devices and displayed the map between them so they could watch together. There had been seven disqualified teams last time, and sixteen surviving teams. How much had changed in the last ten minutes?

The third scan started from the south-southeast, moving north-northwest, or clockwise, from about five o’clock to eleven. This satellite must’ve been orbiting much higher, as its pace was far slower than the previous one. Given the extra time, Llenn decided she would count the surviving teams this time, too.

Dots sprang into being along the southern desert and wasteland stretches. The number of gray dots that signified defeated teams grew and grew. It was a large, wide-open area to begin with, but to her surprise, the number of gray dots had doubled since the last scan, from four to eight.

Three adjacent new dots shone in the ruins in the center of this region. Even Llenn could tell that this meant they had each gathered there, trying to seize control of advantageous terrain.

Only two teams were still alive in this area. They were over five kilometers apart from east to west, and neither was particularly close to any defeated dots.

Without knowing how many members remained, there was no way to tell whether either team posed a significant threat. They could have demolished their competition and headed off with smooth precision or emerged as the sole survivor of a devastating fight, limping to safety.

In both cases, the dots were far from their current position, so they could ignore them until the next scan.

On its way north up the map, the scan hit the city center. It produced three gray dots, almost in the exact same location. Nearby was the glowing dot in about the same place as the last scan. M’s prediction was exactly on point.

“Wow…” She breathed out, in admiration of both her partner and the professional team.

Llenn steeled herself as the scan approached the residential area in the center of the map. They were on the northeast quadrant of it—the upper right part on the map. If there was another light shining nearby, that was who they would fight next. Perhaps, unbeknownst to them, the other team was in the house next door. Perhaps even in this house.

The answer was…

“Nothing. Thank goodness!”

There was only one lit dot in the residential area. No dead teams, even. The scan proceeded north and revealed still no freshly disqualified teams in the marsh. There was one surviving team, which looked to be stationed at the downed spacecraft.

In the grasslands to the northwest, there were two dead teams, one more than before. One team still survived, and if they had cleared out the others, then they were worth avoiding.

Lastly, within the forest, like last time, there were two living teams and no dead ones. In fact, the two teams had hardly moved since the previous scan.

That made eight new dropouts, for fifteen in total.
