21 DEBRIEF

“Leave the damn pizza, Jan.”

We didn’t go home right away. As soon as we moored at the inner harbour, Jan bandaged my finger as Adam paced the dock. He repeatedly asked how I was doing? Did I want to go to the hospital? Did I need painkillers?

No, no and no. I wanted food and warm, clean clothes.

“We’re not going back to your place,” Adam said. “I don’t know how many of Katriona’s men might be there. We can stop at a mall, and you can get some clothes. Or call Sage?”

“No. Don’t call Sage. She will lose it.” Which, would be understandable.

We stopped at a mall. Adam bought himself a new pair of jeans and shirt and changed in the men’s washroom. I did the same in the women’s and tossed my clothes into a garbage bin. I washed. My hands and face dripping, I turned to grab paper towel, only to find an air dryer.

Are you kidding me?

I reefed on a toilet paper roll, dabbing my cheeks, choking down a scream. I picked tearaway bits off my damp face, squelching the desire to kick the air dryer. I braced my hands on the sink. Breathe. From pulling up my jeans, my finger was bleeding all over again. I rinsed it. It wouldn’t stop. I brushed aside tears with my sleeve. Blood splattered on the tile behind the faucet.

“Jade Thyme?”

I startled. “Yes. Who are you?”

The woman smiled and slowly stepped forward. “You don’t know me, but I was there.”

Where?

“At the trial. I was one of the nurses in the gallery. Thank you, you and Norman Bastine, for prosecuting R.J. He’s a disgusting individual. The conviction meant so much to us.”

A conviction that was being appealed and possibly overturned. My shoulders caved. I squeezed my eyes shut, and my body shuddered from remorse.

Taking in the scene, my pale face and streaked make-up; the sink and clumps of wet toilet paper; the nurse said, “You’ve had a bad day? Right?”

“Pretty shitty.” I sniffed. “I’m usually not like this.” I motioned to my finger and my messy hair.

“Can I look?”

“Sure.”

She carefully unwrapped Jan’s bandage. “Oh dear. I can disinfect this. It’s going to sting, but then I can properly wrap it.”

“Please do.”

She placed a large purse on the counter and pulled out a first aid kit.

“Do you always have a first aid kit on you?” I asked.

“I didn’t use to, until I ran into someone needing help.” She talked about pain receptors, and pressure, stuff I knew nothing about and would never remember, except her soothing tone. She also pulled out a small towel from her magic bag and gave it to me. I wiped my face.

The disinfectant stung like hell. She wrapped a bandage around my nail and stood back. “Check on it every couple of days. You don’t want it to get infected.”

“Thank you very much.” I looked at the blood streaks in the sink. “I’ve made a mess.” I looked around for something to clean up with.

“I’ve got this. Trust me, I’ve seen much worse.
