Chapter Fifteen

Two days before Christmas and all was well. Check marks filled Quin’s task list. Everything from mailing presents to his nieces and nephews, to handing out winter greetings to chamber members had been accomplished. First Night plans were all running smoothly, and the ten-day forecast showed promising weather. He hadn’t had more than one antacid for days. Best of all, tonight he had a date with Makenna.

He’d stopped by the antique store daily since the night they’d painted. The few minutes he spent there lightened his spirits. Although it defied logic, he still had a nagging feeling that time inside the store ran on a slightly different schedule.

The cloud over everything was Bradford-Stone. According to his research, the only reason they would want prime real estate near the common would be for a hotel. Hawthorne needed a hotel like they needed an Elvis impersonator. According to Liberty, the bed and breakfast only reached one hundred percent capacity a few days a year. Hawthorne was too far from Boston to be convenient for tourists and too near to not be a day trip. No building applications had been turned in, and the entire block was in a city historic preservation district. A new hotel would have to be built in a style consistent with the 1820s Hill house and couldn’t exceed forty feet in height.

He quietly communicated to the business owners that there would be a meeting to discuss their interests and that of the city of Hawthorne. With one exception, everyone had been happy about his announcement.

The train whistle sounded on his phone. “Hi, Pops.”

“I wasn’t fast enough again.”

“On your email trip deal?” Quin sat back in his chair to listen.

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry. How many times have you tried?”

“Over a hundred. I want to find a place we can go together.”

“I’d love to go with you anyplace other than Siberia. The cold and I don’t get along.”

Walter laughed. “Deal. Nothing requiring furred coats.”

“Sounds good. I’ll see you tonight.”

“Tonight.” Pops’s call disconnected.

Quin checked his watch. He was even running ahead of schedule. He whistled one of his favorite tunes as he left his office.

Mrs. Zimmerman looked up from her desk. “Someone’s in the holiday spirit.”

“Today feels like one of those rare, perfect days, and I am embracing it.”

“More like the eye of a hurricane, if you ask me. However, the eye makes it possible to get through.”

“I’m sure you’re right. I expect the rest will hit next week, and we’ll both want a holiday come January second.”

“Speaking of which, the extra two hundred New Year’s party kits showed up this morning. I checked the boxes myself. Oh, and this came for you.” Mrs. Zimmerman held up a jar of Covington House cranberry sauce. “Liberty said she noticed you didn’t order any for Christmas and wanted to make sure Walter had some.”

“Walter and my mom leave for Rhode Island in the morning. I’ll send it with them. Pops was hoping to get one of his vacations for Christmas, but it didn’t happen, so he’s going to his sister’s house.
