Chapter Thirteen

The gleeful yells of a small child woke Craig. For a minute, he didn’t move as, with one eye cracked, he evaluated the strange gray light. Then he popped up with all the enthusiasm of his own youth and stuck two fingers in his blinds. Sure enough, a soft blanket of white covered the yard and canopied the trees. In an unscripted dance, flakes still drifted from the sky. The happy cries issued from a little boy across the street who spiraled down his driveway on a round, plastic sled.

Anna. Was she waking up this morning with the same excitement over the snow, the same excitement over seeing him again that he felt about seeing her?

He reached for his phone, charging by his bed, and texted.

GOOD MORNING. SEE YOU IN AN HOUR?

After she’d left last night, Craig had refused to dissect what had happened between them. The normal protests jockeyed for position in his mind even as he headed for the shower, but the intoxicating endorphins of affection and connection drowned them out. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt so good, so normal.

Maybe he was being a sucker, but he refused to believe anything except that Anna genuinely cared about him and Margo. And if she did, they could work through any obstacles. Sure, he was one of her supervisors for this practicum, but it ended in May. They just had to keep things low-key until then. The university town burgeoned with the very type of businesses she’d described as her ideal employers.

While Craig toweled his hair dry, a response from Anna came through on his cell. GOOD MORNING. DON’T YOU KNOW THERE’S ICE UNDER THE SNOW?

He grinned and typed. I HAVE A FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE. And he only lived three miles away. His route would not require crossing bridges or getting on the loop using slippery elevated ramps.

IN THAT CASE, THE COFFEE’S ON!

He couldn’t get there fast enough.

Craig tugged on jeans and slid a heavy sweater over his head. Anticipation rose as he pictured seeing where Anna lived, learning more about her, and meeting her other roommates besides the sassy Kristi, who was sure to tease them. That was okay. He knew how to dish it right back. They’d walk up to Five Points—maybe with her friends, but hopefully just the two of them—where the coffee shop and maybe a couple of stores would be open. The trendy area would hum with college students, professors, and young families, all speculating hopefully about how long the snow would last. Perhaps in the midst of the excitement he could hold Anna’s hand and maybe steal a quick kiss or two.

He palmed his keys, glancing around the house. Its emptiness mocked him. Even when Margo was there, the silence often stretched into eternity. Craig missed having a
