Chapter 19

Liam couldn’t hold a thought for more than ten seconds—except for one single thought—Moira. She was all anyone could think of. When was the last time anyone saw her? Which way was she heading? Was she alone?

Twenty-four hours had passed since anyone had heard from her, and no one had seen her after lunch at the round-up.

Her lawyer had been the one to call the sheriff after she’d missed a meeting with him. He’d flown in from Denver specifically for that appointment, which not even Abigail had known about. The lawyer wouldn’t say what the meeting was about beyond questions she had about the estate.

Sheriff Clint Gallagher and his deputies talked to everyone at the round-up once and then again. The only lead they’d gathered was that she’d been peppering questions at Liam’s Aunt Lou about her Aunt Lily and her last months.

Clint stood before a pacing Liam; his heavy tread removing a bit of white paint from the porch with each step. “We need to get up there now,” Liam said. “There is no worn trail to the mine. Honestly, I could get turned around on that side of the mountain. There’s slushy patches on the side of cliffs, rocks to be scrambled over, not to mention the distance.”

“You don’t know for sure she went up there,” Clint said for the third time.

“You don’t know for sure she didn’t.”

Sol Chapa, commander of Search and Rescue, stepped out of a pickup truck pulling a horse trailer. He spotted the two men and immediately came over. “Has anyone been up the mountain?”

“No,” Liam almost shouted. “Because we’re standing here doing nothing. How many more bodies does that mine have to claim?”

Only waiting for Sol and his tracking ability had kept Liam at the ranch that long, and he would not be held up longer.

With no other direction to turn to, Liam threw a saddle on his gelding and took off up the mountain to the mine, with Sol and Clint scrambling at his heels to follow. As commander of the search party, Sol had tried to convince Liam to stay behind while he went with his top people.

Liam would not be left behind, but in the end, it didn’t matter. The previous night’s rain had washed more of the snow away from the site, leaving no trace of anyone who may have been up at the mine.

They stood at the entrance that had no indication of being disturbed. Liam sank to the ground that had turned into more mud than snow and laid his head across his knees. “Where is she?”

Clint came to his side. “We’ve only barely started looking. I’ve got my deputies tracking down credit cards and her car. It’s still possible she’s out there somewhere on her own. It wouldn’t be the first time she left town without telling anyone.”

“She always told me.” That was a lie; she hadn’t the last time, and then they didn’t speak for three years.

“Let’s get off this mountain,” Clint said. “And we can keep looking.
