The minute the men left the cabin, Katherine stripped herself of her clothes, leaving only her chemise. She listened intently, but didn’t hear any voices raised in anger and didn’t know whether that was a good or bad sign.

Her mouth throbbed, but it was nothing compared to the hurt she suffered from Cade’s degrading accusation that she’d invited that vermin to touch her body. It was the cruelest thing he’d ever said to her. There seemed no way to reach his cold, stubborn heart.

When the cabin door opened, she stopped pacing, but didn’t erase the rebellious stare that filled her eyes. Staying quiet had come to an end. He’d accused her of much, but insinuating she was a whore was inexcusable.

With hands on her hips, she pursed her sore lips and lashed out. “Cadell Leighton, you’re the biggest ass I’ve encountered! How dare you accuse me of wanting to give myself to that wretched scum? I’ve had it with your unfounded accusations. You’re a regular Captain Bligh! It’s no wonder you didn’t make me sleep in the hold with the rats or down in the bilge where all the seawater collects.”

She began to pace like a storm in a teapot. “I’m a giving, unselfish person, but I can only be pushed so far. I’ve done your bidding, fetching and acting like your servant for the last time! I put up with your inhumane treatment, hoping you’d see me for myself, but no, you accuse me of being a harlot!”

She stopped and pounded on his chest with her tightly clenched fists, stressing her point to the fullest. “I’m not the society bitch you think I am. Open your eyes! I’m me, Katherine Amanda Leighton, your wife!”

Her mouth hurt, but it was well worth it having had her say. She waited for a nasty comeback, but all he did was gently grasp her wrists and bring her hands to his lips, where he placed a tender kiss on her skinned knuckles.

“Enough,” he softly murmured. “Come, sit on the bunk. Your mouth is bleeding again.”

She was shocked at his calm tenderness. Where was his anger? He didn’t rebuke her insulting tirade with so much as a frown. She refused to budge.
