The minute the men left the cabin, Katherine stripped herself of her clothes, leaving only her chemise. She listened intently, but didnât hear any voices raised in anger and didnât know whether that was a good or bad sign.
Her mouth throbbed, but it was nothing compared to the hurt she suffered from Cadeâs degrading accusation that sheâd invited that vermin to touch her body. It was the cruelest thing heâd ever said to her. There seemed no way to reach his cold, stubborn heart.
When the cabin door opened, she stopped pacing, but didnât erase the rebellious stare that filled her eyes. Staying quiet had come to an end. Heâd accused her of much, but insinuating she was a whore was inexcusable.
With hands on her hips, she pursed her sore lips and lashed out. âCadell Leighton, youâre the biggest ass Iâve encountered! How dare you accuse me of wanting to give myself to that wretched scum? Iâve had it with your unfounded accusations. Youâre a regular Captain Bligh! Itâs no wonder you didnât make me sleep in the hold with the rats or down in the bilge where all the seawater collects.â
She began to pace like a storm in a teapot. âIâm a giving, unselfish person, but I can only be pushed so far. Iâve done your bidding, fetching and acting like your servant for the last time! I put up with your inhumane treatment, hoping youâd see me for myself, but no, you accuse me of being a harlot!â
She stopped and pounded on his chest with her tightly clenched fists, stressing her point to the fullest. âIâm not the society bitch you think I am. Open your eyes! Iâm me, Katherine Amanda Leighton, your wife!â
Her mouth hurt, but it was well worth it having had her say. She waited for a nasty comeback, but all he did was gently grasp her wrists and bring her hands to his lips, where he placed a tender kiss on her skinned knuckles.
âEnough,â he softly murmured. âCome, sit on the bunk. Your mouth is bleeding again.â
She was shocked at his calm tenderness. Where was his anger? He didnât rebuke her insulting tirade with so much as a frown. She refused to budge.
