8.5.5 Remaining Concerns

At this level of data innovation, the data-driven approach in the company is predominantly focused on what is relevant for R&D teams as well as product management teams. Many other aspects of the business are still operating under traditional opinion-based and hierarchy-driven principles. This will lead to a cultural divide in the organization where some aspects are considered clearly subject to data-driven decision making, other aspects of the business are clearly considered to be impossible to make data-driven decisions around and then there is a gray zone where we focus on a balance of where different parts of the organization take different approaches.

A second concern is that there is a human tendency to only focus on what is easy to measure. Once something is easy to measure, it tends to increase in prominence, largely independent on its inherent value. Similarly, things that are harder to measure tend to be removed or diminished in decision making because these require more interpretation and different people will easily reach different conclusions. The natural tendency to focus on what is easy to measure needs active countermeasures and the organization requires to be challenged on seeking solutions to measuring the hard to measure aspects of the business.
