CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

That long-ago day – that particular morning when the sun came out for the young Morris Wellbeck – had begun like any other. The artist was in his rented studio, drawing pictures of birds while halfheartedly preparing for an appointment. A man by the name of Strom Evermore had commissioned a portrait, and Morris was passing the time while he waited for the man to show up. At such times, Morris often reminisced about his past adventures with Gusset Norling. He longed to return to that more interesting way of life. The pointless tedium of his recent existence was becoming unbearable for Morris. He had experienced, one must remember, a death-defying miracle involving the Ocular Sparrows. An event like that changes a person, making it difficult to tolerate the everyday world and its petty obligations.

“It’s all so meaningless,” he muttered to the blank canvas waiting on the easel before him. “Just a silly sport and a pastime.”

Morris was disturbed from his thoughts by a soft rapping of knuckles on wood. He sighed, laid down his sketchpad, and went to the door, opening it to the person waiting on the other side.

That, of course, was when it happened. That was when Morris Wellbeck felt the warmth of sunlight flooding into his bored and cheerless soul.
