Chapter Twenty-Three

We reached camp in a flurry of tires and dust.

“No panicking until we’re sure that Fish didn’t come back while we were gone,” I said. Mare nodded. She was carrying herself like she was made from spun glass, and was on the verge of shattering.

I jumped down from the Jeep and waved over one of the young tech guys. “Did Sergeant Fleishman return?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Fuuuuuck,” I groaned.

“Hope?” I turned to see Mare. She was holding Speedy against her chest in the same stranglehold she had used in my living room. He was looking a little blue beneath his fur. “What are we going to do?”

“First, gimme,” I said, and reached for the koala. He flopped into my arms, and I slung him up to his usual spot on my shoulders. “Next, we should figure out why Ben isn’t coming.”

“Is he…?” Mare wasn’t sure what question to ask. “Why…won’t he?”

“I can always reach Ben,” I said. “But that doesn’t always mean he’s available, especially if he thinks we’re just on vacation.” I was worried—extremely worried!—but ghosts have their own lives.[28] “We should probably get some contingency asskickers, just in case. Mare, put a call out to—” I started to say, but Speedy slapped a paw across my mouth.

“Wait on that,” the koala said to Mare. “The three of us? We can pretend this is a vacation, but you get Patrick or anyone else from OACET rushing down here to bail us out, and this’ll turn into a media feeding frenzy.”

Fuck. He had a point. The only reason my husband hadn’t come swooping in to save us during the minotaur incident was because OACET Agents were considered advanced government weaponry and couldn’t travel outside of the United States. My husband had spent the entire time we were in Greece working on a legal way to circumvent international law. If he knew we were in trouble, he’d come swooping down here, fast enough to let everyone who follows him around guess that something serious was happening. And if he tried to avoid the crowds and went through the Yuma Proving Grounds or another military base? Holy hell, that’d just mean we had something enormous to hide. Everybody on the planet would be tuning in to Spooky Solutions and pouring jet fuel on Hawley’s attention-fire.

I moved Speedy’s paw away from my mouth. “Can we handle this ourselves?”

“I can’t,” Mare said quietly. “I’m not an action hero; I’m an organizational specialist. Give me something to organize, and I’ll be useful. Until then…”

“Call Mike,” I decided. “Tell him to contact Ben and send him out here. Hell, ask Mike if he wants to come fight some ghosts with us.”

Mare’s shoulders dropped a little in relief. Mike was a friend. A reliable, intelligent, and (most importantly) living friend. “Sure,” she replied. “But it’ll take hours for him to get here. What’ll we do until then?”

“We find Fish before he reaches that pirate,” I said. “Mare, make that call. Speedy? Go…go do something smart.”

“Jesus wept,” the koala sighed, and he climbed down to the ground.
