TWENTY-FOUR

A GLOWING GOLDEN TRAP

“Still thinking?” The illusionary Victor sighed an exaggerated sigh. “That’s fine. I know it’s a tough decision. We’ll murder the Sharpshooter next, okay?”

A gust of wind blew past Glenn hard enough to send him stumbling. Svara yelped as she tumbled out of the [-Deterrence Circle-]. The smoking and shadow-filled Devourer leapt from the floor and wrapped her up before she even landed. It coiled tight around her as she gasped.

Fiona attacked again and again as Svara writhed, yet every time it looked like she might damage the Devourer enough to free Svara, it drained another of Svara’s levels and healed itself back to a full HP. Svara was, quite literally, having her progress stolen before her eyes.

As Glenn stared in absolute horror, every terrifying new fact he’d just learned for the first time snapped together in his head. With Jacob Coverfall in his corner, he still had one dangerous, desperate play. “[-Fight Me!-]” he shouted.

The Devourer uncoiled from its victim with a smoky roar. Svara dropped, gasping but alive. Though her bow and quiver popped off her with a resounding snap, her armor stayed on.

Glenn only then remembered the level requirement on [Chameleon Armor] was only level 12. It simply cost hundreds of moons to craft. How many levels had that abomination devoured?

The Demon shrieked forward and slammed into the edge of Jacob’s [-Deterrence Circle-]. Blinding light flared as the snake-like Demon pushed on, driven by a mad desire to devour the Town Guard standing inside a circle it could neither penetrate nor destroy. Celes, Goddess of Resurrection, ensured that through her servant, Jacob Coverfall.

Scales burned and blistered as the Devourer writhed against the bubble of golden light. Glenn noticed the bubble was now visibly bending inward. Would the circle hold it off?

“Push it back!” Jacob rasped. “Glenn, now!”

Glenn stepped forward, though not out of the [-Deterrence Circle-]. “Hey, Devourer? Devour this.” He swung his [Guardian Mace] with every last point of his 32 Strength.

This time, unlike when he’d struck the desouled Vulpor and the desouled Crackpaws, his mace flared bright white. This was a Demon, and Glenn’s mace killed Demons. Yet just as with the high level Burrowers that he, Logain, and Martin destroyed outside Wolfpine’s gates two years ago after they were dropped by a ruthless Mindbender, the Devourer survived the first blow. Still, many scales were broken.

“[-Fight Me!-]” Glenn shouted again.

The Devourer screeched and ground itself against the bright light of the [-Deterrence Circle-]. Wind blew as Fiona blew by again and again, shredding the Devourer with each strike. Without an Adventurer to wrap up and drain levels from, the Demon couldn’t heal itself. Glenn smacked it hard enough to drive it to the floor of the temple, then smacked it again and again.

Fiona’s glowing spear tip stabbed the Devourer everywhere at once. She howled furiously as the Demon, now downed, thrashed. Its wounds looked to be legion now, but it still lived. That was because it was a Six Hells Demon designed to take on a full raid of level 40 Adventurers.
