Chapter Eleven

Through the crack between the doors, I have a front row seat as the king barrels through the doorway. His eyes scan the room and the fury in his gaze grows palpable, even in the small space I hide in. I now understand where Harland’s fear stems from.

“Where is she?” the king asks in a seething tone. His dark eyes hone in on Harland and his face scrunches up with anger. His cheeks and the tips of his ears are rosy.

Harland stands tall with his back to me and holds his chin up in a proud stance. “I’m not sure who you’re referring to father.”

The sound of the slap reverberates through the room, and Harland’s head knocks sideways. A loud gasp escapes my lips and my hands fly up to my face in horror, hoping they haven’t heard me. Harland’s shoulders tense, but he says nothing. He keeps his face hidden from me so I can’t see his expression.

The king lets out a guttural laugh. “I knew you were weak, boy, but I didn’t expect you to act so quickly. We were unable to intercept the bastard prince you set free. At least the girl is still here since we didn’t see her on the back of that horse. I’ve been thinking long and hard on how to make you pay for your treachery, and what better way than with your life?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Harland spits through gritted teeth.

“There is no way the prince and the girl escaped without help from the inside.”

“If you’ve forgotten, let me remind you that the girl is the Soul Speaker. I’m sure the dead helped her escape.”

The king snorts. “That’s absurd. Ghosts don’t have a physical body so how can they possibly do anything? That’s if they’re even real to begin with.”

“Oh, they are, and you’d be surprised what they can do through her.”

Another slap rings through the air as the king hits the other side of Harland’s face. “I don’t like the insolence in your tone, boy. Keep that up and you really will find your head on a spike.”

Seeing Harland get pushed around causes my anger to spike. Acting on instinct, I choose to intervene and fly out of the small bubble of safety without a second thought. “You would dare kill off your heir?”

The king sneers at me as if I’m vermin skittering around on the floor. “There she is. Why am I not surprised you were here this whole time? Let me answer your question with one of my own. What good is an heir who won’t listen?”

“Then, I’ll respond the same way. What good is a king who won’t listen to his prince or his people?”

His eyes turn murderous and he nods at the guard next to me. The guard raises his hand and the sound of another smack assaults my ears before the pain registers on my cheek. He steps back into line with an unapologetic glare.

My hand covers the stinging skin in shock.
