Will was a fairly straight-shooter in life these days, but it hadn’t always been that way. Several years back, after the heady days of football were over and after some rough financial times on the family ranch, he had gone down a few dark backroads.

Roads where Mexican drug deals went down and sometimes went bad. Sometimes went real bad. He had done some things he regretted now. Some of it was probably not a whole lot different than what Cody had done, really, and some of it was undoubtedly worse. He would bet anything that his little brother had never killed anyone.

Somehow he had survived all of that, eventually untangling himself from some very bad people and things. He finally got to where he started doing some good things with his life again. He caught some good breaks with the ranch, started making some good money on livestock and a side business with quarter horses. Made a lot of money in a pretty short amount of time.

So, even though Will’s nose was pretty clean these days, he still owned a healthy mean streak and one hell of a bad temper when he was being pushed. What this guy was up to he didn’t know. He supposed what was really bothering him was the fact that he was being played. This whole thing was wrong and he was sure of it.

He looked at the man who was staring at the western horizon, where just a tip of sun was still showing, and still wasn’t sure how to play this. As it seemed to happen more times than not in this kind of situation, he would hear his dad’s raspy voice giving him instructions one day after a fight he lost on for the first day of high school.

“Always remember three things Will. One, when you know for sure there’s gonna be a scrap, make sure you hit ’em a good one first. Either in the snot box, jaw or the gut and you’ll take some sap outta them before the thing even starts. Always, always, hit ’em first though. Two, don’t miss. And Three, nothing works every time.”

Yep, he thought, Hank Reeves had always considered himself to be somewhat of a cowboy humorist, a tremendous wit in his own mind.

And so with that thought, he was actually smiling as he took a quick step in and hit the big man square on the side of the jaw, up toward the ear a little, with a hard overhand right. He hit him real solid, a straight, short punch that wasted no movement.

The guy’s cowboy hat went flying. His arms pin-wheeled as he tried to regain some balance, but his legs were wobbling badly. Without pause, Will quickly kicked the side of the big man’s knee, forcing it inward.

There was an audible pop as the guy grunted and went down hard, like a fallen tree. It was Will’s turn not to get too close to him now.

“I’m going to ask you one more time and then you’re going to answer me,” Will said, slow and even.
