Chapter Thirteen
Edward arrived to ride with Sophia, and they hurried to the stables. Sophia greeted Ash as Edward petted Nellie and saddled her for his wife. Her palms were sweaty, and she remained quiet, uncertain how to act with her new husband. The whirlwind of the wedding, their intimate wedding night, then two weeks apart left her off balance.
Once they were away from the barn and school, they let the horses meander through the forest trails. Edward told her a bit about the yearlingsâ next stage of training until they entered a clearing. After a quick canter to give the horses some exercise, the couple rode abreast, walking their mounts through a meadow aimlessly.
They had planned to discuss her thoughts on her classes, but Sophia was also eager to understand the other aspects of the school.
âThere seems to be a number of levels of classes here,â she began tentatively, unsure how to phrase the questions she had.
âYes,â Edward agreed, nodding. âThe itinerary you are following of course, then advanced classes, and curricula for different roles.â
âDifferent roles? Are all the students here with marriage in mind?â
âNo, little one. Some shall work in households as servants, for instance.â
âServants? Oh, dear. How does that happen? Where shall they be placed then?â Given her station in life, as a poor relation of a Peer with no dowry, she had not had many alternatives. But servants had even less choice than she did.
âWell, imagine Nicholas before he met Roslynn. He needed an outlet for his need for spanking and dominance. There are of course places that cater to those needs, but some men prefer, shall we say, the convenience of availability within their own household, especially if they do not live in London.â
Sophia nodded tentatively but remained concerned. Even the short while between her fatherâs death and Nicholasâs letter calling her to London was fraught with anxiety about her future and lack of choices. She could not imagine living with that oneâs entire life. But just as she had not minded being spanked, she recognized a household might run smoother if the servant was trained and understood the environment in which sheâd work. And the house would be even cleaner, she thought, giggling internally, if servants knew their brooms could be used on their bottoms if they did not wield them properly. âHow does the school match households with servants?â
âI donât know all the details, but from what Mrs. Montague and Nicholas told me, they are careful.â Edward seemed to understand her concern. âThe Peers of the Realm belong to a few select clubsâWhiteâs, Brooksâ, and the like. More gossip is exchanged there than in all the ladiesâ drawing rooms combined, I suspect. Mrs. Montague, or an alumna of the school who is not well known in London, approaches the men discreetly. She shares some general information, no specifics, to protect the school. If they are interested or have friends who are, they must share their specific inclinations or preferences, and she sends one or more girls to interview.
