Chapter Twelve:

Mr. Michelson and Domenic delved deeper into the depths of the building. The lighting on the main floor was all moonlight, and the air was colder than the higher floors. Not by much, but it was enough to make Domenic curl into his hoody in search of warmth from the freezing cold.

Their breath came out in thick puffs of hazy white that circled about their heads like looming ghostly vultures, as they approached the stairwell that would take them into the lowest level of the building. They had just reached the basement door when Domenic’s phone went off. He jumped from the vibrating buzz thrumming away in the confines of his jean pocket. Mr. Michelson had heard it too, and turned to face Domenic, his hand poised on the handle of the door.

Unsure of how Mr. Michelson would take the cellphone going off, Domenic laughed nervously and fished the device from his pocket. Clicking the button on the side, the home screen light up his face and he tapped on the surface of the cell.

One new message.

Opening the mail, he saw a picture of his dad on a hospital bed. He looked banged up, and his arm was in a cast, but he was giving a lazy smile and thumbing up at the camera with his good hand. Domenic recognized the face attached to the contact number. It was Karl. A short message was attached with the photo:
