Blood courses through John’s body in a whole new way now that we’ve professed our love. I feel the change in each kiss. Each gaze. Deep inside, he reaches out for me. And every part of me clings to him. He’s my anchor. The single powerful thread holding my sanity together. One spun by a love I don’t understand but feel so deeply I can’t deny it.

“Stop looking at me that way.” I turn my blushing face away. He turns it back to him.

“Don’t be embarrassed when the man you love lets you know how attracted he is to you.” His fingers trace along my jaw. “Especially after I heard the banter between you and the nurse at the hospital. Trust me when I say I like kissing you just as much as you like it.”

“Stop.” My face burns. “It was just girl talk.”

“Speaking of talk…” He adjusts me against his shoulder. “I need to have a serious conversation with you before it gets too late.”

“Tired of me already? No problem. I’ll call a cab and be out of here in half an hour.”

“Not while I’m still breathing.” He opens a drawer in the nightstand. “Your medication is here. The sleeping pills.”

“While I’m still breathing, I’m not taking any. There. That was easy.”

He wipes his building grin away. “As impressive as you are, the nightmares are a growing concern. I’m worried about you.”

“You don’t have to be. Especially if we scrap the whole idea of me staying here. I’ll go home and you won’t even know if I have a single dream.”

“Last night, I added up all the time you slept before a nightmare set in and it was only sixty minutes. That has to change in order for your body to heal. Not to mention the toll it’s taking on your mind.” He puts the bottle in my hand. “I see the pain. How the nightmares affect your mental state. There’s nothing to prove, sweetheart. You don’t have to suffer.”

“I’m not. And I’m not trying to prove anything.” I give the bottle back to him.

“Dr. Mansfield prescribed these.” He pops the cap and shakes pills into his palm. “They’re not as strong as the others.”

“I don’t want them.”

“Mary.” He swallows. “It will break my heart to force you to do anything, but if I have to, I will make you take these.”

“Forcing me to take drugs is illegal.”

“I don’t care.” He shrugs.

“I care.” The fear inside me cares. “You can’t drug me just because it makes you feel better.”

“Aww, sweetheart.” He trades the pills for my hand, wiping a lone tear off my cheek. “It doesn’t make me feel better. It tears me apart. But I’ve sat idly by and let you have your way. And your way is tormenting you.” His lips run over the trail the tear left. “As much as I admire your resilience, I have to make decisions that are right for you. Even if they aren’t what you want.”

“Why can’t you just trust me to know what’s best for me? I’ve managed to survive on my own for thirty-two years.
