Chapter Thirteen

Jack shuffled back into the school and walked to his locker. The memory of the grim set of Candice's lips and the sad light in her eyes circled in his mind. Why was Candice avoiding him? Had he spooked her somehow? And where had she gone in such a hurry?

Candice, where are you? From the beginning, he'd made no secret of his interest in her. Maybe he'd come on too strong and scared her? Or maybe she's not as over Brad as she told you she was. The thought settled like a hard rock inside his stomach.

And then there were the rumors.

Frustrated, Jack scrubbed his hand through his hair and ripped open his locker door.

“Hey, man, are you okay?” Christian walked up beside him. His face was filled with concern for Jack.

“Yeah, it's just . . . Candice is avoiding me.”

“Do you know why? Have you asked her about the rumors?” Christian asked. “Come on, Jack. Everyone has heard them.”

“I was hoping she'd talk to me. Trust me enough to tell me. I mean, I really like her, man. She's kind and funny, and when she laughs . . . ” Jack shook his head. “I'm such a fool.”

Christian chuckled. “No, you're a good guy, and unfortunately, even the good guys get hurt.”

Jack sighed and was about to agree when his phone rang, immediately stalling the breath in his chest. He swiped the phone open and brought it to his ear.

“Candice?” he asked immediately.

The voice on the other end wasn't the one he'd been hoping for.

“Hi, Jack. It's Mom,” his mother answered sweetly.

“Oh. Sorry, Mom. It's been a rough day.”

“You want to tell me about it?”

Jack and Christian started their trek out of the school building as he explained. “Candice was acting strange all day. First, she wouldn't talk to me; then she wouldn't answer any of my texts; and then she practically sped away from me in the parking lot! I'm losing my mind worrying about her.”

“She's probably going through something and just needs a bit of time. I'm sure she'll talk to you when she's ready,” his mom reassured.

She was probably right. Candice just needed some time. “Yeah, maybe. Are we still on to help you at the Save a Life Center this afternoon?”

“Yes—I have a quick stop to make, and then I'll meet you guys there,” she said.

“Thanks, Mom. I love you.”

“Love you, too. Bye!”

Jack slid the phone into his pocket and slung his backpack higher up on his shoulder.

“Your mom still needs us to help her move furniture at the clinic?” Christian asked, glancing down at his phone to check the time.

“Yeah, let's get going.”

Jack climbed into his truck and trailed Christian to the center.

What if the rumors were true? What if Candice was actually pregnant? Is that what Brad had meant when he'd asked Jack to look after her?

An old Buddy Holly song crooned on the radio, and he turned the volume up, hoping to drown out his busy thoughts. It was useless, though. All he could think about was Candice and how she was pushing him away.
